Job Summary

Calyxt is seeking a highly motivated and result - oriented Research Scientist to join our plant genotyping and genomics team. The successful candidate will work in a team environment and interact with experts in genome engineering, molecular biology, biochemical analytics, and plant transformation across Calyxt with a shared mission of engineering and verifying precise genome modifications to enable plant synthetic biology. The individual will be involved in the design and execution of new experiments in consultation with his or her supervisor. 

Job Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Influence the build-out and continual improvement of a high-throughput genomics & gene expression profiling platform. 
  • Evaluate, develop, and implement recent technologies and methodologies to enhance platform capabilities for targeted gene expression and global (transcriptomic) profiling. 
  • Evaluate existing sample preparation methods and automate processes. 
  • Implement high-throughput assays to validate genetic engineering. 
  • Interact with the Chemical Analytics team to understand processes and support implementation of high-throughput sample preparation for metabolomics profiling. 
  • Work cross-functionally to continuously improve analytical approaches and methods.
  • Write standard operating procedures (SOPs) as required. 
  • Prepare data packages, reports, and presentations to communicate with project stakeholders at various levels. 
  • Deposit data into accessible bioinformatic databases and work cross-functionally with the bioinformatics and data science teams to analyze and leverage data for decision making.
  • Develop and submit innovative ideas to continually improve Calyxt technology platforms. 
  • Maintain an organized and safe laboratory working environment. 



  • PhD (preferred) or MS (plus 5 years’ experience) in Biology, Genetics, Genomics, or other related majors. 
  • 1-3 years of industry experience in a high-throughput (HTP) laboratory environment 
  • Solid understanding of transcriptomics and transcriptome assembly/function annotation methods. 
  • Hands-on experience with a variety of Molecular Biology techniques. 
  • Solid organizational and time management skills to ensure successful and timely documentation and completion of project tasks. 
  • Ability to work flexible hours (evenings and/or weekends) as needed.
  • Excellent verbal and written science communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment to achieve project goals. 
  • Knowledge in at least one programming language (R, Python, etc.). 
  • Ability to learn new programming languages. 
  • Ability to learn scripting languages or software for programming automated machines. 

Preferred qualifications:

  • 3+ years of industry experience in a high-throughput (HTP) laboratory environment with automation. 
  • LIMS experience.
  • Experience in chemical analysis and/or metabolomics. 
  • TECAN scripting knowledge and experience developing EVOware Scripts.
