Position Summary
Under general supervision, performs routine and complex tasks related to the inspection, maintenance, testing, repair, installation and modification of electrical systems, equipment fixtures and appliances. All work is done in compliance with local, State and National codes. Occasionally oversees and guides the work of lower classifications.
Essential Duties
- Maintains electrical systems, inspecting, repairing a wide variety of electrical systems and equipment, including lighting, signal, alarm, control, and power circuits.
- Examines and tests distribution panels, controls, circuits, fixtures and motors in order to locate malfunctions such as blown fuses, short circuits, broken wires, loose connections and worn motor brushes.
- Repairs electrical circuits and equipment, replacing faulty switches, sockets, plugs, fuses, insulators and other components in the electrical system.
- Performs preventative maintenance on motors, generators, circuits and other electrical equipment as scheduled.
- Assists in the installation of machinery and equipment, providing resource assistance to contractors and co-workers.
- Fabricates and installs specialized electrical devices and modifies electrical systems as required.
- Estimates materials and costs required to complete assigned tasks.
- Measures, cuts, bends, threads, assemble and installs electrical conduit using hand and power tools.
- Occasionally oversees and guides the work of lower classifications.
- Reviews wiring diagrams and blueprints in order to assist in the planning of modifications to the electrical systems.
- Assists with other duties as workload permits or as assigned, such as performing general maintenance and repairs.
- Maintains the electrical safety program, tests and inspections.
- Maintains the appearance, condition and security of electrical spaces, closets, storage, panels and equipment.

Completion of a four (4) year Electrician’s Apprenticeship and a minimum of three (3) years experience as a Journeyman Electrician. A level of knowledge generally obtained by graduation from a trade or vocational school with classes in blueprint reading, electricity, math and physics.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The physical ability to walk throughout the Campus, climbing ladders and lifting moderately heavy motors, wiring, etc. The ability to read blueprints and plan modifications to electrical systems.
Physical Requirements
The physical ability to lift heavy to moderately heavy tools, equipment, supplies, etc.
Work Environment
Working conditions vary, exposed to all weather conditions when working outside of the buildings and exposed to a variety of conditions including tunnels. Care and alertness are required when working with electrical currents and equipment, and exposure to injury is minimized by observance of established safety procedures.
Salary/Pay Information
$34.45 per hour/ IUOE Grade-5
Licenses/Certifications
Possession of a valid Journeyman’s License.
Possession of a valid State of Michigan Driver’s License
Anticipated Work Schedule
Monday thru Friday, 7:30am to 3:30pm
