Reports To: LGBTQ+ Program & Resource Manager

Salary Range: $36K - $40K

Big Brothers Big Sisters Independence (BBBSI) is the largest BBBS agency in the state and fourth largest in the nation. Our mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth, while working collaboratively to strengthen the quality of the mentoring field and close the mentoring gap. 


JOB DESCRIPTION

We know that LGBTQ+ youth face additional and unique challenges in their development. In 2018, BBBSI started a program to support these queer and questioning youth specifically. Our LGBTQ+ Program works with school communities to provide accessible, safe, and caring LGBTQ+ volunteers to support our youth in achieving their full potential. BBBSI seeks a full-time LGBTQ+ Program Coordinator to support this endeavor. Some evening/weekend work is required, as is travel throughout the local BBBS service area, with the majority of time spent during 9-5 work hours. 


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES


Community Engagement

  • Participate, support, and occasionally lead community events to help recruit LGBTQ+ Volunteers. 
  • Participation in community events that advocate for LGBTQ+ youth. 

Volunteer Screening and Enrollment

  • Screen, interview, and enroll LGBTQ+ volunteers ensuring safe, responsible, and reliable persons participate in BBBSI programming.

Partnership and Program Development

  • Build relationships with partners such as community centers, nonprofits, corporations, and schools in order to grow and sustain LGBTQ+ programming. 
  • Oversee and manage LGBTQ+ volunteers to support local Gender and Sexuality Alliances  as safe spaces for LGBTQ+ youth and allies. Act as liaison with site-based contacts to ensure effective implementation of program and coordination of all site-specific needs.
  • Develop programming for the GSA meetings.

Child Safety and Match Support (Case Management) 

  • Provide case management “Match Support” to youth, volunteers and school liaisons to ensure child safety, positive impacts for youth, constructive and satisfying relationships between youth and volunteers, and a strong sense of affiliation with BBBSI on the part of volunteers.  
  • Meet or exceed goals including, but not limited to the following areas: site visits, match support, recruiting, interviewing, and training LGBTQ+ volunteers. 
  • Effectively utilize database system for recording and reviewing all child/mentor relationship details.
  • Provide friendly, approachable customer service and represent the Agency and our mission in a professional and positive manner.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS


Academic Requirements: Bachelor’s degree (OR an Associate’s Degree and a minimum 4 years relevant experience OR no degree but a minimum of 8 years relevant experience) required per national Agency requirements. 


Professional Requirements: Knowledge of and/or experience in human services field a plus. This position will require reimbursable travel to assigned schools in part of our 7-county region. Must have daily, dependable access to a car, valid driver's license, and meet state-required automobile insurance minimums.
