Purpose: To manage the daily upkeep of Meow Wolf’s fabrication shop and artistic studio. 

Location: Santa Fe, NM.

Compensation: This is an exempt position. The starting pay for this position is $70,000. Compensation will vary based on experience.

Meow Wolf is seeking a multi-talented Shop and Studio Lead to join the Artistic Development & Production team; the position is an integral member of the leadership team and an important support role for the entire department of people making physical art. The Shop and Studio Lead will manage the day-to-day upkeep of the fabrication shop and artistic studio, including equipment maintenance, managing space allocation, preparing areas for new builds and mockups, inventory management and stocking shop consumables, leading demos and training for specific heavy equipment, and fabricating wood and metal projects as needed. There will be occasional opportunities for production team build projects as well, as needed.


The Shop and Studio Lead will have experience working in a collaborative environment and will demonstrate proficiency working with a variety of artistic and fabrication materials and techniques. They will display a strong ability to proactively identify and solve issues that could hinder production. The Shop and Studio Lead is expected to independently make decisions according to the following principles, in order:

  1. Safety
  2. Find ways to make it easier for team members to create art
  3. Identify efficiencies in our operation

The Shop and Studio Lead will field day-to-day tasks from the Production Director, Production Managers and the Sr. Director of Design & Production. They will strive to bring out the best in others, both creatively and culturally, as a considerate and reliable team member.  

Requirements

You will maintain and manage various areas of the fabrication shop and artistic studio, thereby providing a safe and creative space for Meow Wolf artists to make their art. 


How you will do it…

  • Perform or supervise tool maintenance in all Artistic Development & Production Team work areas: Art studio, casting, fabrics, wood, metal, 3D Printing, CNC. Track maintenance records and duty cycles in Meow Wolf’s maintenance and inspection database.
  • Coordinate and manage outside maintenance vendors when needed 
  • Manage production inventory and restock consumables and tools as needed 
  • Instruct team members on safe operation of all tools and equipment
  • Keep up-to-date records of safety instructional confirmation sign-offs for team members on each major piece of equipment 
  • Lead material process demos for team members  
  • Plan and execute shop upgrades and layout optimization as needed
  • Research new equipment options and prepare purchase requests
  • Build shop furniture and other shop fixtures including movable walls, racks, and tables
  • Prepare work areas before new builds and mockups commence
  • Regularly organize the studios and shops, working with Production Managers to ensure studios and shops are set up to best serve current projects 
  • Work with the Purchasing Team to ensure that inventory items are reordered when inventory items are running low and work with the Shipping and Receiving Team to accept new materials as they arrive. Restock all consumables and inventory materials as needed.
  • Lead the charge during Tidy Fridays (our end-of-week, 1 hour full team cleanup), mobilizing people to help in the areas that need the most work
  • Work as fabricator/artist support member on team build projects when needed
  • Maintain an OSHA 30 certification

To be successful in this role...

  • You bring 5 to 7 years experience working in an artistic, fabrication, and/or production focused field
  • You come with studio/ shop maintenance and teaching experience 
  • You know how to safely and skillfully operate a forklift, scissor lift, and gantry crane 
  • You possess experience with a wide variety of tools and art processes 
  • You are a patient teacher and communicator 
  • You are an excellent collaborator and can work with a variety of personalities 
  • You come with basic Google Suite experience

Work environment and physical demands…

  • This position is based in Santa Fe, NM.
  • This is a full-time position averaging 40 hours a week, Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm MT or 10 am to 6 pm MT. Alternatively, a 10 hour/4 day week schedule may be implemented instead, and will be at the company’s discretion. Occasional evening and weekend work, as well as travel to off-site locations, may be required as job duties demand. 
  • All employees will comply with company and OSHA standard workplace safety protocols. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions..
  • This role also includes standard equipment use such as powered and non-powered tools and various art making materials.
  • The employee will routinely use respirators in the presence of any dusts, fogs, fumes, mists, gasses, smokes, sprays, or vapors.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds
  • The employee may also be required to drive ~ 2 hrs round trip on occasion to pick up or drop off specific equipment.
