About Farmstand

GrowNYC Farmstands are part of a network of food access retail sites operated by GrowNYC, along with Greenmarkets and Fresh Food Box sites. Through Farmstands, GrowNYC trains and employs young people to sell fresh, affordable food in neighborhoods throughout the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens. The food sold at Farmstands is grown by farmers in the Northeast and transparently sourced through GrowNYC Wholesale. 


Seasonal Farmstand Site Staff

The Farmstand Staff will help sell fruits, vegetables, and other products outdoors throughout New York City under the supervision of the Farmstand Site Lead (rotating position.) The Farmstand Staff will be cross trained on all aspects of the Farmstand Site Lead role,and may be asked to fill in as the Lead as necessary. Please note that some Site Lead locations require driving and therefore a drivers license. The Farmstand Staff position is seasonal and is part-time or full-time depending on availability of applicant.


Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to)


Staff Duties/Responsibilities:


• Set up and break down of the farm stand, carrying equipment and cases/bags of produce weighing up to 50lbs, folding tables and tents, and performing other physical labor 

• Daily market operations— product display, merchandising, sales, customer service, inventorying and site clean up according to schedule

• Perform debit/credit, cash, EBT and other nutrition benefit transactions 

• Educate customers on a variety of food access and incentive programs.


Lead Duties/Responsibilities:


• Set up and break down site, carrying equipment and cases/bags of produce weighing up to 50lbs, folding tables and tents, and performing other physical labor 

• Supervise daily market operations— product display, merchandising, sales, customer service, inventorying and site clean up according to schedule

• Supervise all Farmstand staff and youth staff at the market, guiding them as they gain experience in customer service and merchandising and educating them about produce and the program’s mission

• Attend weekly meetings and complete administrative work remotely and at GrowNYC office when it reopens

• Perform debit/credit, cash, EBT and other nutrition benefit transactions and maintain accurate records

• Educate customers on a variety of food access and incentive programs.

• Maintain organized accounting for the Farmstand and complete weekly reports for each site. 

• Work with community partner organizations to conduct outreach to promote Farmstands


Participate in weekly youth workforce development workshops (5pm-6pm, Tuesdays) and facilitate weekly discussions at the Farmstand to reinforce content from these workshops with participating youth.

• (For Driving Positions) Complete additional trainings on GrowNYC vehicle policies and safe driving. Safely operate a van on NYC roads and highways, distributing market equipment to Farmstands and reporting vehicle issues immediately when they arise.




Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Early riser who enjoys working outdoors in all weather conditions 
  • Experience working with adolescents 
  • Experience working in retail and/or with sales
  • Willing to work weekdays and weekends
  •  Enjoys talking and working with people of all backgrounds
  •  Comfortable working with the public in a variety of NYC neighborhoods
  •  Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  •  Works well both independently and as a member of a team 
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Creative problem-solver, able to troubleshoot and use good judgment to make on-the-spot decisions


Ideal Qualifications

  •  Passionate about farming, farmers markets, local agriculture, cooking, and/or food access
  •  Experience in community outreach, and has an understanding of inequalities in the food system
  •  Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Google Suite
  • Have a valid driver’s license and willingness to drive a cargo van (not required for all positions)
  •  Fluency in multiple languages is a big plus (especially, but not limited to, Spanish, Mandarin and Cantonese)


Physical Requirements

Ability to lift up to 50lbs, though employee may request accommodations as needed. 


Position Details 

Schedule: The schedule has variable hours – a minimum of 15 hours a week to no more than 35 hours per week. Shifts are available Tuesdays through Saturdays and usually start early in the morning (7am). 


Compensation: The position is a non-exempt seasonal and variable hourly position. It pays $19/hour when performing staff role and $20/hour when performing Lead role. and includes only statutory benefits. 


  

Applications

Interviews will take place during the month of June, and hiring will occur in the middle of June. Training begins at the end of June, and all seasonal Farmstands will open at the beginning of July. Hours will ramp up to the regular full or part-time schedules during this time.
