Substitute Teacher for High School

Description

The substitute teacher performs the instructional and classroom management processes for teachers who are absent. A person in this position works on an as-needed basis. The substitute teacher agrees to abide by the educational policies and procedures of the Diocese of Orlando and the Office of Catholic Schools as well as comply with the educational policies and procedures of Melbourne Central Catholic High School (MCC). The substitute teacher cooperates with staff in providing an educational environment that promotes the ministry of Catholic education.


Essential Duties and responsibilities:

  • Responds promptly to cell phone, text, or email communications from the Principal’s office regarding their availability for substitute assignments.
  • Reports to the Principal’s office on the day of the assignment no later than 7:45 AM or at the time designated by the school. 
  • Receives schedule and key(s) for the substitute assignment. Student assignments will be available in the classroom. 
  • Conducts classroom activities including attendance and prayer. 
  • Follows the instructions in the lesson plans and collects student assignments as directed. The substitute teacher administers tests and quizzes and maintains classroom order.
  • Adheres to MCC Faculty and Student Handbook policies and procedures.
  • Performs campus duties that are assigned to the teacher they are replacing.
  • Monitors student behavior and appearance and writes any uniform violation or behavior referrals as necessary.
  • Attends Mass or Campus-wide gatherings as scheduled.
  • Documents their activities in a note to the regular teacher at the end of the day.
  • Keeps doors locked during class time. 
  • Locks the door and return the key(s) to the Principal’s office at the end of each day.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Substitute teachers need a minimum of 60 college credits/AA degree. 
  • Completes Safe Environment training and a full background check successfully. 
  • Creates a classroom that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
  • Maintains a safe and orderly environment.
  • Dresses appropriately and modestly to maintain a professional image.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect all students.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect and maintain equipment, materials, and facilities.
