The Media & Public Relations Specialist within the core communications team will work with leaders and staff across the organization to create opportunities to raise brand awareness and mission engagement by building strategic opportunities and relationships among thought leaders, policymakers, donors, and journalists to tell the Sabin story. She/he will identify stories and opportunities for owned and earned media to increase engagement among media, partners, and public audiences. 


The Media & Public Relations Specialist plays a pivotal role in developing winning messages and strategies on a wide range of topics and issues around global immunization and vaccine development, access, and uptake. Experience generating earned media and successfully crafting content, news releases, media advisories and pitches is a must. 

This role will be responsible for monitoring vaccine policy and related global health topics and creating associated communications for the organization. This position reports to the Vice President, Communications.


Responsibilities:


Media relations and monitoring

  • Generate regular domestic and global media coverage of Sabin’s activities and leadership through proactive and reactive engagement with media in national, international, and trade outlets
  • Help conceptualize and draft media materials including pitches, op-eds, letters-to-the-editor, media kits, media      advisories, briefing memos, press releases, talking points, and one-sheeters
  • Develop and maintain media lists and serve as primary point of contact for press inquiries, screening and managing responses
  • Build and maintain relationships with journalists at top-tier global print and broadcast media outlets, and thought leaders in relevant fields
  • Work with Sabin experts to prepare for media interviews; staff interviews on site or virtually
  • Function as the media liaison for events and coordinate press conferences
  • Identify speaking opportunities for Sabin experts to advance  expertise in strategic areas and prepare briefing materials for conferences, panel discussions, and other events
  • Regularly monitor all media for content and sentiment related to Sabin and specific topics of interest; make recommendations to ensure Sabin takes advantage of key opportunities in a timely manner 
  • Create and distribute weekly news digest to staff and key partners 
  • Capture and report on analytics for all news releases and media activities

Communications 

  • Work closely with colleagues to develop digital content, photo essays and videos, projects, and reports with a media hook 
  • Write and/or copyedit content to support leadership and programs
  • Create and maintain lists of of events, conferences, and award opportunities with the goal of advancing Sabin’s work and expertise nationally and globally
  • Maintain news section of Sabin website
  • Write social media posts amplifying media mentions and coverage 
  • Other related duties, as assigned
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field such as public relations, journalism, communications, English or related field
  • 4+ years relevant media and public relations experience
  • Experience writing press releases and advisories, responding to media inquiries, pitching stories and training staff for media 
  • Exceptional writing with an ability to translate complex or scientific topics into compelling stories and messaging targeting a variety of audiences
  • Experience interviewing scientists and researchers for stories and Q&As
  • Experience setting up and conducting media monitoring and creating media report outs distilling key metrics 
  • Record of media placement in print, digital and/or broadcast media
  • Demonstrated ability to give strategic media relations counsel to executive leaders and staff
  • Excellent understanding of media trends and news cycle
  • Some understanding of global health and vaccine research and development is preferred
  • Experience using Meltwater, Cision, and other public relations tools
