Hillel Day School seeks a Library Media Specialist who is passionate about literature, technology, media literacy, and promoting literacy-rich lives. The Library Media Specialist must be a team player, who values collaboration, embraces being part of a team, yet is a self-starter who can handle tasks independently. The Library Media Specialist understands best practices in research, both digitally and in print. Prior teaching experience is required, as is a valid Michigan teaching certification (or willingness to obtain certification). Preference is given to candidates who have experience in technology or librarian roles. 


Principal Responsibilities:

  • Teach classes in children’s literature, media literacy, research, and library skills in both fixed and project-based formats
  • Promote literacy projects and events that provide enrichment
  • Stay abreast of best practices related to reliable sourcing, digital citizenship, acceptable use, safe media practices, and library management
  • Lead literacy professional development and parent education
  • Promote technology use and integration, serving as a tech-partner for teachers and supporting the technology team, as needed
  • Operate a mobile library and manage circulation
  • Fulfill other duties, as assigned, such as lunch, recess, arrival, dismissal duties
  • Attend scheduled meetings and professional development
Requirements


  • Possess a deep love for and knowledge of literature, ranging from Children through Young Adult authors
  • Ability to work with students and teachers to find both print and online resources
  • Preference is given to those with Library Science or Educational Technology degrees and experience; Michigan teaching certification required
  • Knowledge of Library Management Platforms; Follet experience a plus
  • Proficient in library cataloging
  • Excellent classroom management skills
  • Experience presenting to teachers and parents 
  • This is an on-campus teaching position and is STS eligible 

Education: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s degree preferred
  • State certification as a school librarian or teaching certification
