Description

The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) is recruiting for a new role in our organization. As a key member of GFOA’s leadership team, GFOA’s new Director, Member Strategy will develop and implement a comprehensive plan to grow and measure membership and member engagement, build brand and program awareness to expand GFOA’s level of influence, and help GFOA achieve our mission to advance excellence in public finance. The Director will build GFOA’s capacity to use data to inform decisions by connecting program managers to key member and market data and assist in using data to support the growth, retention and delivery of value to GFOA’s 22,000+ members. 


The Director will report to GFOA’s Deputy Executive Director as part of GFOA’s member experience team, and will oversee membership strategy, marketing, communications and data analytics. The Director will work closely with other internal leaders in areas of education, research, certification, membership, and resource development.

  

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Lead development of GFOA’s member strategy focused on growth and engagement
  • Analyze member data to identify trends within the industry and related to engagement with GFOA
  • Ensure integration of diversity, equity, and inclusion in GFOA membership efforts 
  • Coordinate GFOA’s network of state/provincial affiliate organizations 
  • Conduct member research activities 
  • Promote GFOA best practices, research, and other resources
  • Collaborate with staff and strategic partners to plan, develop and execute GFOA’s marketing and advertising initiatives
  • Assist in evaluating program effectiveness to connect operational performance to member outcomes
  • Develop strategies for digital communications for GFOA including website, social media, and targeted marketing to drive membership growth and engagement
  • Oversee Affinity groups (www.gfoa.org/gfoa-groups) and student initiatives (www.gfoa.org/student-opportunities
  • Serve as member of GFOA leadership team 

The Director will have flexibility with GFOA’s hybrid work environment, but will need to be able to come into the Chicago office as needed. Requirements

 The ideal candidate will have the following professional qualities, skills and characteristics:

  • Passion for the mission
  • Strategic leader with a track record of building effective strategies to achieve specific outcomes
  • Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and expertise in creating strategies that will build a diverse and inclusive membership
  • Degree in business administration, public administration, public relations, marketing, communications, or related field and/or 10+ years of related leadership experience
  • Experience in branding and developing brand standards 
  • Experience in developing digital marketing strategies, including launch of new products and programs
  • Experience in content marketing
  • Understanding of public relations and media relations 
  • Knowledge of survey design and market research practices
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in program implementation, focusing on strategic outcomes for the organization
  • Experience managing teams and coordinating resources across the organization 
  • Collaborative leadership skills
  • Familiarity with state and local government and public finance industry
