The Self-Help Center Staff attorney works with staff paralegals, Justice Corp fellows and interns, law student and paralegal interns and volunteers to provide legal information and education to self-represented litigants to allow them to select and prepare the legal forms and documents that they will need to gain access to the California court systems. 


The Self-Help staff attorney will be running a high-volume information and education clinic that assists litigants with their cases in both Los Angeles and Orange County with expectations of assisting a high volume of litigants each day. This part time, hourly position reports to the Supervising Attorney.


Responsibilities

  • Supervise Self-Help staff providing legal information and education to self-represented litigants in civil legal matters. 
  • Engage in numerous fast-paced litigant contact, including conducting litigant interviews and providing immediate legal information and education to litigants in variety of areas of civil laws, including family law, housing law and consumer law.
  • Extensive review and assessment of self-prepared legal document and pleadings.
  • Quick and efficient legal analysis of legal issues presented by self-help paralegals, intake workers, volunteers, and others to allow them to provide legal information and education to litigants.
  • Interview litigants effectively and efficiently communicate with litigants. 
  • Supervise and conduct various legal education, legal information and document preparation workshops.
  • Engage in factual and legal research to provide competent legal information to Self-Help staff for relay to litigants.
  • Extensive review of self-prepared pleadings, memoranda, correspondence and other legal documents.
  • Work with community groups, conduct outreach, and provide community education presentations and materials. 
  • Direct and supervise the legal work of a large number of paralegal and law students, interns, and volunteers during open hours of Self-Help Center. 
  • Provide onsite coverage at the Compton Self-Help Center when needed. 
  • Complete 5 full days onsite as a part of onboarding. 
  • Perform other duties as required to meet the needs of the organization.
Requirements


  • Juris Doctor degree and an active member in good-standing of the California Bar or member to another state bar and ability to register as a legal services provider.
  • Knowledge of all aspects of Family Law including dissolutions/divorces, paternity cases, requests for domestic violence restraining orders, requests for orders, responses, declarations, trial briefs, ex parte requests, motions, discovery, and other related pleadings.
  • Knowledge of all aspects of Landlord-Tenant law, including unlawful detainer notices, complaints, answers and motions.
  • Knowledge of all aspects of Consumer Debt laws and practice.
  • Knowledge of all aspects of the California procedures for Name and Gender Changes
  • Experience with form preparation from start to completion for Family Law cases , Landlord-Tenant cases, Consumer Debt cases, and Name and Gender changes.
  • Strong legal research and writing skills
  • Articulate, creative, and passionate advocate with excellent written and oral communication skills, computer skills, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong personal work ethic, initiative, and ability to organize time, manage diverse activities, and meet critical deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to spot legal issues and comfort with providing real-time counsel & advice to Self-Help staff.
  • Strong interpersonal skill, client communication skills and comfort working with indigent clients.
  • Strong technical skills; including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams).
  • Great organizational skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to interact with a wide range of clients utilizing client-centered lawyering and trauma-informed frameworks.
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle, active insurance policy and ability to travel frequently in and around the service area for representation and to engage with clients and community partners - Required.
  • Prior legal services advocacy experience – Preferred.
  • Bilingual proficiency – Preferred.

Salary Description
$38.46 - $50.48 per hour
