Transportation Manager

POSITION SUMMARY

In this role, you’ll manage the Transportation Department in all aspects of daily operations by supporting the training and development of transportation personnel, and monitoring performance, safety, financial cost, effeciency, equipment, and compliance of all transportation functions. Each day provides you with a different challenge as you work with the transportation personnel, GM, maintenance department and customers to ensure effective execution of transportation operational goals and growth strategy. The transportation manager reports directly to the General Manager.

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

  • Promote a safe working culture for all employees; work with safety and maintenance personnel to minimize risk and always increase safety for employees. 
  • Responsible for daily operations including safety, efficiency, customer focus and maintaining the integrity of the safety and environmental systems within company’s operations for transportation department.  
  • Drive operational performance and improvements to meet or exceed company goals. 
  • Assist in managing transportation budget for the fiscal year under the direction of the General Manager. 
  • Provide leadership and direction to ensure efficiency, quality, service, and cost-effective management of resources. 
  • Build effective teams and develop direct reports for future opportunities. 
  • Ensure that all fleets have the tools and training to operate safely at all times and that all federal, state, and local laws concerning safety, environment and other applicable areas are adhered to. 
  • Provide advice and support to the team. 
  • Work with General Manager to establish long-range goals, strategies, plans, and policies. 
  • Be an innovator, constantly striving for safer ways to improve efficiencies, improve our team, and enhance the customer experience. 
  • Ensure drivers are fully trained in Pre/Post Trip Inspections 
  • Ensure drivers always carry and maintain up-to-date credentials 
  • Ensure drivers complete all required training on time 
  • Directing activities related to planning, dispatching, routing, and tracking of transportation vehicles 
  • Planning, organizing, and managing subordinate staff members to ensure work is completed and consistent with the company's standards and policies 
  • Ensure all license, registration, insurance, and inspections are up to date and meet DOT standards 
  • Coordinate repairs and routine maintenance of transportation vehicles with internal maintenance personnel. 
  • Directing investigations to verify and resolve customer or shipper complaints.  
  • Schedule & organize the road-testing requirements for newly hired drivers. 
  • Responsible for FMCSA driver file compliance 
  • Responsible for maintaining driver's fuel cards 
  • Responsible for Driver’s Safety Training 
  • Conduct weekly driver meetings 
  • Attend and participate in internal meetings and complete required training 
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management 
  • Oversee contract positions to ensure timely completion. 
  • Forecast transportation abilities to assist with the overall efficient material flow to minimize material inventory buildup

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Demonstrated progressive responsibility or growth in transportation, logistics or similar industries. 
  • Working knowledge of trucking, transportation and/or logistics. 
  • Working knowledge of FMCSA/DOT driver rules and regulations. 
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience. 
  • Excellent skills with Microsoft Office and the ability to rapidly learn different software applications including Time & Labor, Asset Management and GPS Tracking Software. 
  • Effective communication and leadership skills. 
  • Ability to use decision making skills for cost effective solutions on projects. 
  • Customer oriented, maintaining positive relations with transportation personnel. 
  • Valid driver’s license. 


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods on uneven surfaces 
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull a minimum of 50 pounds 
  • Ability to spend prolonged periods of time sitting at a desk and working on a computer
