The Refrigeration & Ammonia Maintenance Technician is responsible for ensuring proper functioning of all refrigeration equipment, to include compressors, cooling towers and roof top units. Will also be responsible for facilities work to include, but not limited to, lighting, plumbing, soft water systems, and boiler/steam systems. All duties will be completed with the highest safety, quality and GMP standards.
Major Responsibilities and Essential Functions
- Perform installation, alteration and preventative maintenance of refrigeration systems and related equipment/facilities.
- Troubleshoot and repair all mechanical and electrical equipment involved with the Ammonia refrigeration system and roof top units.
- Assist in the Preventative Maintenance Program using work orders and documenting work performed on equipment to maintain operation.
- Maintain all documentation related to refrigeration, water, and chemical usage as necessary.
- Adjustments of equipment in a Safe Manner as needed during production.
- Familiar with start-up and shut down processes in production plants.
- Must use lock out / tag out procedures to isolate equipment prior to working on equipment.
- Work with Planner to establish schedule for the replacement of parts without disrupting process unless repair cannot be performed safely.
- Maintain Bakerly facilities to include but not limited to lighting, plumbing, painting, and facility repairs.
- Attention to detail and focus on safety will be critical in this role.
- Utilizes established PM and repair policies and procedures to return equipment to full operational status.
- Read and understand technical drawings (e.g., blueprints, electronic/mechanical schematics) to repair/maintain equipment.
- Troubleshoot complex problems with equipment where the repair is not immediately visible or obvious.
- Work as a team member with operations, contractors, and other technicians to support the facility in the repair and maintenance of equipment.
- Utilize Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to understand workload and record actions (e.g., work orders, asset/labor history, inventory usage, record work history, identify parts usage, identify warranties) and to perform work in a timely and effective manner.
- Communicate with (or to) individuals or groups verbally and/or in writing (e.g., management, team, associates)
- Operate material handling equipment, moving machinery, and other powered equipment as necessary to the job function.
- Maintain neat and orderly work area, properly maintain tools per Bakerly GMP policies.
- OSHA regulations compliant
- Proper PPE and attire always when on the floor; this includes hairnets, beard nets, gloves (optional), lab coats used inside the packing room, Tyvek sleeves, and any other PPE required per department and compliance.
- Adhere to GMP’s to and from the production floor; including but not limited to hand washing, sanitizing, no food, gum, candy, cough drops, or chewing tobacco on the production floor.
- Uphold SQF standards; materials have Lot numbers visible and easily readable, clean workstations, organized tooling, and an overall clean and organized workspace.
- Report ALL quality and safety concerns to reporting manager or member of management team not limited to but including unknown visitors, pest control, expiration or production quality in question, sanitation, etc.
- All other duties as assigned by leadership.
3 years’ experience plus of ammonia-based refrigeration systems. Formal training through work experience and/or from a trade school or technical college.
- Electrical and mechanical troubleshooting skills.
- Experience with air compressors and associated control systems.
- Experience with boilers, steam generators and water softeners preferred.
- Excellent communication skills to ensure timely repairs of equipment and issues that arise.
- RETA 1 certification and EPA refrigeration license.
- 3 years’ experience in industrial refrigeration (e.g., valve rebuilds, working with refrigeration systems)
- Ability to lift 50 pounds repeatedly using proper lifting techniques.
- Ability to work in extreme temperatures, and around machinery and chemicals.
- Ability to meet strict deadlines.
- Ability to respond to continually changing priorities; both in and out of the department.
- Knowledge of FDA and OSHA regulations is a plus.
