Senior Horticulturist

This position coordinates the development and maintenance of display gardens to ensure the highest standard and quality for the enjoyment of the visitors in a manner consistent with Atlanta Botanical Garden’s brand and standards.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate, implement, monitor and participate in horticultural practices necessary to maintain the highest standards for the Garden. Supervise assistant horticulturists and volunteers. This will include but not be limited to watering, weeding, pruning, planting, pest control, fertilization, pesticide spraying, seasonal plant installations and other horticultural tasks.
  • Labeling, accessioning & inventorying 
  • Budgeting
  • Attending Garden events and garden related events
  • Accessioning
  • Completes tasks as assigned by Horticulture Manager and by own observations
  • Some involvement with plant lists and curation
  • Assist visitors and provide tours when required.   
  • Ability to work on ladders and at heights.
  • Weekend Duty: required to work on rotating weekends 


Minimum level of education: Bachelor’s degree in horticulture, botany or related field 


  • Four to Five years professional gardening experience. 
  • Previous experience working in a public garden setting is a plus
  • Plant knowledge – a reasonable knowledge of hardy and annual plants and their overall cultural requirements
  • Collections Management – understanding of plant collection management procedures including working with a plant collections policy, database records, labeling and mapping. 
  • Plant health – sound knowledge in the identification and management of plant health issues including management of pests; diseases and plant nutrition and a basic understanding of the use of biological control and Integrated pest management.
  • Must be able to operate hand and power garden equipment

Language, license, certification:

  • Valid driver’s license,
  • GA Pesticide Applicator’s License

  • Must be able to sustain moderate physical exertion fairly consistently with full range of body motion for lifting up to 50 pounds;
  • Must be able to operate hand and power garden equipment; 
  • Must know and use safety procedures. 
  • Required to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Must be able to stand, stoop, bend, twist frequently and for extended periods of time.  
  • The use of ladders is required as necessary for plant care.


Good organizational and time management skills, ability to effectively respond to multiple, changing priorities is essential. Must be able to effectively interact with the general public and co-workers in a professional and respectful manner with excellent written and verbal communication skills. Also must be able to work in a team environment and culture well. Adhere to all garden regulations as laid out in the Garden Staff Manual and will be required to wear garden uniform at all times.
