Marketing & PR Manager

Occupational Summary

  • Responsible for developing, implementing, and executing strategic marketing plans for the Cook Museum of Natural Science (CMNS) to attract new visitors and maintain existing levels of visitor attendance once achieved
  • Strategize and develop the museum's marketing and communications objectives as an integral part of the museum leadership team and advance the goals and mission of CMNS
  • Maximize the museum's visibility within the community while promoting a strong brand identity

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leads all interactions with outside media organizations and advertising agencies and is comfortable being on camera, dealing with reporters, and writing press releases
  • Cultivates and maintains working relationships with members of the news media (TV, radio, newspaper, internet, etc.) and forges new relationships with contacts in museum-specific media
  • Understands the role marketing plays in launching and maintaining the new CMNS and how this impacts revenue streams
  • Maintains a high level of professional judgement and discretion while serving as one of the museum’s primary external and internal communicators
  • Creates a strong, balanced marketing budget, manages projects with budgets, and ensures the budgeted marketing dollars are utilized through strategic media to target the right audience groups.
  • Oversees the effectiveness of marketing efforts, with a strong emphasis on data analysis. Able to use marketing analytics (i.e. Google analytics) to identify trends and challenges, and drive results
  • Coordinates and oversees the production of all museum print media materials needed by each department
  • Oversees, refreshes, and manages content for the museum website, newsletter, press releases, blogs, and video
  • Coordinates and oversees the editorial and quality assurance process with content creators, such as the Executive Director, Director of Development, Education Manager, Collections Manager, and guest naturalists
  • Creates and distributes e-blasts to members and potential visitors on a schedule determined by leadership team
  • Ensures active and creative use of popular social media platforms (such as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook) in a way that engages followers
  • Leads the effort to create awareness for the CMNS brand and offerings including special events, fundraising efforts, exhibits, and education programs
  • Constructs a tracking and archiving system to capture all the museums marketing efforts and news media coverage, including television, radio, newspaper, and internet and reports monthly to Executive Director

Educational/Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 5+ years professional experience creating and implementing successful integrated marketing plans, some graphic design experience a plus

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Ability to understand, synthesize, and act on information or instructions provided in written, oral, diagram, spreadsheet, or schedule form
  • Intimate understanding of traditional and emerging marketing channels
  • Proficient in Microsoft® Office Suite and Adobe® Creative Suite with willingness to learn other programs as needed
  • Must have a high level of literacy, regarding spelling, grammar, and punctuation
  • Proficient in understanding and using popular social media platforms (such as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook)
  • Excellent project management skills and ability to plan and organize multiple projects simultaneously
  • Innovative and creative thinking with excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Highly motivated team player who enjoys a culture of both playfulness and professionalism

Time Commitments

  • Able to work weekends, evenings, and special events as needed.
