Description

Responsible for profitable underwriting and developing new business opportunities for large and middle market construction projects. Underwrites builders risks according to HDI’s underwriting policies and guidelines, risk appetite, pricing guides and local insurance laws/regulations across a wide range of classes: buildings, renewable energy, power, manufacturing, chemicals, heavy civil works, railroads, infrastructure, and others. Works within specific limits of authority on assessments requiring significant technical complexity and coordination.

 

Essential functions: 

  • Develops the US Engineering Lines portfolio, meet financial goals, maintains and expands HDI’s footprint in the US market.
  • Actively identifies client needs and growth potential and develops solutions in partnership with clients / brokers.

  • Interfaces with local brokers, clients, home office as required, including data and risk information collection, and the systematic processing of new and renewal business.
  • Reviews applications and determines acceptability of risk and determines pricing in accordance HDI’s guidelines and standards, pricing methods and compliance requirements.
  • Prepares quotes and answer questions from brokers, policyholders, home office, other offices, or other external contacts. 
  • Negotiates with brokers to reach positive and profitable outcomes.
  • Develops specialized endorsement language as necessary.
  • Monitors outstanding premiums, timely and accurate issuance of contractual documentation.
  • Provides guidance and assistance to other underwriters and to other functional areas, particularly when related to cross-sell opportunities.
  • Works with the Lead Underwriter and home office on risks exceeding authority level or requiring special handling.
  • Stays current on industry trends and developments and plays an active role in the HDI’s Global Engineering Lines network in terms of knowledge sharing, training, special projects and / or research topics.
  • Participates with the Chief Underwriting Officer and Lead Underwriter in the development and implementation of marketing and business strategy.


Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Fifteen years of previous experience. 
  • High levels of policy form and broker manuscript expertise.
  • Strong underwriting skills and knowledge of insurance and underwriting principles, practices and procedures. 
  • Existing broker and customer relationships, or experience and ability to develop strong broker and customer relationships quickly. 
  • Experience marketing to specialized brokers. 
  • Strong collaboration and team building skills. 
  • Understanding of natural catastrophe peril modelling and pricing models. 
  • Can-do attitude and creative approaches
