Woodburn Food Pantry: Driver & Pantry Assistant, Part-time: 32 hours/week

Limited Duration - expected to last through December 31, 2023 (May be extended)


 $18.00/hour - This position is eligible for a 5% bilingual differential if the successful candidate meets the Food Share standard on our Spanish bilingual test.

Who are we looking for? We are looking for a driver who is wanting to be part of a food pantry team that operates the busiest pantry in Marion County. This person will fill a limited duration role to support AWARE Food Bank in Woodburn Oregon while it is in a temporary location due to a building fire. This driver/pantry assistant will primarily be responsible for maintaining relationships with local grocery stores, picking up food from those stores, as well as driving to and from the main distribution center in Salem for other needed items. This person will be flexible knowing their day-to-day could look different depending on the needs of the pantry or the availability of resources. We are looking for a person who is willing to get their hands dirty and break a sweat while being safe and keeping a friendly demeanor during their workday.  


Marion Polk Food Share is the regional food bank servicing Marion and Polk Counties. Support from our local community makes it possible for the Food Share to collect and distribute nutritious food for children, adults, and seniors through more than 100 partner programs, including food pantries, meal sites and home-delivered meals and to carry out programs to address the root causes of hunger.

Statement of Purpose:

To contribute to the success of the food pantry by supporting its operation and food distributions.


Summary of Role:

Assists AWARE Food Bank with movement of food and materials in and out of the facility. This position helps maintain an organized pantry, picks up and delivers food and materials, and may assist with food distributions.


*This is a limited duration position that will last through December 31, 2023 with potential for an extension based on organizational need.


Core Areas of Responsibility


  • Pickup and deliveries: Pick-up and delivery food and other materials in and out of the food pantry 
  • Inventory and Order Tracking: support staff and volunteers in tracking food and practicing FIFO (First in First Out) 
  • Setup/Cleanup Assistant: Assist in pre and post activities related to client food distribution


**This position has no supervisory responsibilities but may provide guidance and training to retail establishments and/or volunteers.


Areas of Responsibility, Evaluation and Essential Functions:

  • Pickup and deliveries (60%)
  • Drive a variety of vehicles to execute food pickups and deliveries from grocery stores, offsite storage locations, and the Food Share distribution center
  • Maintain food at a safe temperature and condition during transport 
  • Maintain and follow company truck safety and maintenance procedures (vehicle checks, preventative maintenance, etc.) 
  • Use equipment safely and appropriately for creating safe loads as well as for personal safety. 
  • Communicates with supervisor any vehicle or food issues in a timely manner


  • Inventory and Order Tracking (25%)
  • Uses inventory system to accurately record donations and purchases
  • Unload food orders from the Food Share and food donors. Unstack pallets and sort food in the pantry in proper places. 
  • Sort out produce or other perishables that are not fit to eat and assist in disposal of product. 
  • Sort mixed food product into appropriate categories. 
  • Assist in Managing FIFO rotation of product. 
  • Communicate inventory levels with Pantry Manager. 


  • Setup/Cleanup Assistant (15%)
  • Assist in daily preparation for food distribution. This could include but is not limited to: stocking shelves or refrigerators, setting up tents or signs, or cleaning and disinfecting warehouse, waiting room and office spaces.
  • Assist in closing duties at end of food distribution. This could include but is not limited to: removing warehouse or distribution debris, properly disposing of garbage and recyclables. Sweeping and dusting 
  • May assist with food pantry distribution to the public as needed both on site and mobile programs. Could include performing client intake, assisting clients shopping through the pantry, or building food boxes. 


  • Other duties as assigned 



Job Conditions:

Work may be performed seated for prolonged periods of time, in addition to heavy, vigorous physical activities. Computer and keyboard work may also be required. Work more than 40 hours per week during peak business periods may be required. Will regularly lift, move, and carry objects more than 70 pounds. During regular retail store visits, work is subject to varying indoor and outdoor temperatures and road and walkway surface in all seasons. May work or travel out of the local area and work outside normal working hours, such as evenings and weekends, on occasion.  

Remote work is NOT possible for this position.  

The Food Share provides essential services to our neighbors in Marion and Polk counties. As a result, all Food Share employees may be asked to report to work during local public health, weather, or other environmental emergencies.



Requirements

Education and/or Experience; Certificates, /Licenses/Registrations:

  • Prior delivery/pick up experience preferred.
  • Experience in inventory management, warehouse work, food services, food retail, cleaning/janitorial, social services or other related field desired.  
  • Experience in making minor vehicle repairs and performing routine maintenance.
  • Experience in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Must obtain forklift and pallet jack certification within 30 days of hire and possess and maintain current Oregon Food Handler’s Card.
  • Must possess Oregon driver’s license and auto insurance and acceptable driving history for the last three years.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen and full background check, including driving record check.



Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse group people, including people experiencing poverty and crisis, people in various professional settings, culturally diverse communities, non-English speakers and others. 
  • Knowledge of food safety and safe food handling procedures. 
  • Able to work with volunteers, staff and community partners as part of a team.
  • GED or HS diploma preferred.
  • Must maintain positive customer service attitude and courteous working relationships with staff, board, volunteers, donors and members of the public.
  • Capable of performing repetitive, sustained heavy lifting sometimes in excess of 70 pounds with strenuous activity not limited to heavy lifting.
  • Ability to push/pull loads up to 1,500 pounds on carts and pallet jacks.
  • Ability to work well under pressure with frequent interruptions and shifting priorities. Ability to exercise sound judgement daily.
  • Proven ability to work in a safe, accurate, timely and efficient manner.
  • Punctual and reliable.
