Job Summary:
Operates light to heavy construction equipment. Also performs routine to semi skilled manual task.
Essential Functions:
- Drive and operate, and maintains all sanitation equipment, garbage trucks, knuckle booms, commercial trucks, front loader, curb and rear loaders, brush trucks and dump trucks;
- Load and unload material at the landfill;
- Uses all supporting hands tools, including rakes, pitchforks, chainsaws, etc;
- May pick up and carry sanitation waste, recycled goods, yard waste bag of leaves, grass, limbs, and bundles of limbs;
- May pickup bulk items;
- Performs cleaning and greasing of sanitation truck, checking tires, brakes, fluids, oil, head and tail lights, windows and mirrors, and overall condition of equipment, report any unsafe conditions to supervisor;
- Performs all duties of a Sanitation Worker;
- Attends to traffic conditions, motorists, pedestrians, weather, overhead power lines, co-workers in completing route in the safest and most expedites manner;
- Directs traffic and flags motorists;
- Fill out forms and daily paper work with completeness and accuracy;
- Complete timecard and maintains reports of duties performed;
- Performs other tasked as assigned;
- Display courteous, civil, and respectful behavior to all persons and shall make every effort to meet the needs of citizens requesting assistance;
- Refrain from the use of abusive, indecent or profane language or gestures in the workplace, in the performance of duties or in the presence of a member of the public;
- Perform duties in a manner that is fair, impartial, and without prejudice toward any person or group;
- Refrain from arguing unnecessarily with any person or otherwise showing a lack of self-control, ridicule, or defame any employee, elected official or any other person or any agency of the City of Columbia;
- Display responsibility for attendance and promptness and report to the work area on time.
Secondary Functions:
Operates additional equipment, mowers, graders, skid steer loaders.

Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills:
- Knowledge of city street locations;
- Knowledge of traffic laws, traffic awareness, safe operating procedures;
- Extensive knowledge of vehicle and equipment repairs;
- The hazards and applicable safety rules and regulations involved in operating refuse trucks;
- The traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in a truck operation; and the City streets and alleys;
- Skill in the safe and efficient operation of assigned equipment and the observance of traffic laws and regulations.
Ability:
- Ability to read maps and understand collection routes;
- Ability to add, subtract;
- Ability to speak clearly;
- Ability to write clearly; able to read and interpret written information;
- Ability to follow instructions, responds to management direction; completes tasks on time or notifies appropriate person with an alternate plan;
- Ability to meet scheduling and attendance requirements.
Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:
- Valid Driver License, Class B -OR MUST OBTAIN PERMIT WITHIN 3 MONTHS OF HIRE DATE AND OBTAIN CLASS B CDL WITHIN 6 MONTHS OF HIRE.
Preferred Education:
- High school education or G.E.D.; six months of sanitation operations experience which may be substituted for one year of maintenance work or equipment operation.
