Position Overview:


SHINE is looking for an intern to perform a capability study of neutron sources located throughout Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA). This will be a comprehensive research project involving the collection of data regarding nuclear reactors, accelerators, or any significant neutron source available in the region.  Targeting Fall 2023.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Identify all EMEA neutron sources
  • Conduct extensive internet/literature search activities to identify key attributes regarding neutron sources
  • Areas of research include grams of materials allowed to irradiate, strength of the neutron source, uptime of the source, flexibility for the loading and unloading of materials in the source, etc.
  • Identify commercially available space in each neutron source for potential use by SHINE
  • Validate economics of neutron sources with mathematical models provided by SHINE
  • Prepare database of details identified, prepare reports and present data to management team
Requirements

Qualifications:

  • 3rd or 4th year BS/MS studying Nuclear Engineering, Physics, Medical Physics, or equivalent education 
  • Experience with scientific calculations and creating simple databases
  • Willingness to do internet research, learn and understand new technology, and ability to contact neutron source organizations directly
  • Ability to read from engineering drawings or schematics
  • Ability to follow written procedures and accurately record data
  • Follow clear instructions provided by SHINE staff
  • Mentor will be provided
  • Work will be performed off site using SHINE computer equipment
  • Candidates must understand, sign and comply with non-disclosure agreements
