Title: Urban Medical Year Intern

Department: Medical Support

Supervisor: Site Manager

Status: Exempt full-time

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The urban medical year intern works full-time, primarily alongside medical clinicians to facilitate patient flow by documenting patient encounters in the electronic health record.  Interns also secondarily complete a 12-month medical/spiritual advancement curriculum.  Interns spend 6-9 shifts/week alongside assigned provider(s), and 1-2 shifts/week completing the advancement work (shift=4hrs).  This position is designed to launch college-graduates into further graduate-level training that would equip them to provide healthcare to those with greatest need, in the name of Jesus Christ.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Accompany provider into patient exam room to transcribe history and physical exam
  • According to provider, list accurate symptoms, diagnoses, plans, and follow-up instructions
  • Recognize elements of physical exam and record details appropriately
  • According to provider, list accurate orders for labs, imaging, and prescriptions
  • Document procedures performed by the provider
  • According to provider, properly document CPT/ICD codes necessary for billing/coding
  • Help maintain patient flow by matching pace of provider
  • Follow templates and progress note structure specific to provider
  • Follow billing/coding guidelines and respond promptly to claims editing requests
  • Seek clarity from provider when medical record appears to have ambiguity or discrepancy
  • Review and proofread documentation before finalizing

Requirements

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Education: minimum bachelors degree

Experience: prefer 6mos outpatient clinic experience or 3mos internal training; prefer 6mos experience with eClinicalWorks or 3mos unpaid training

Skills/abilities: English fluency; typing performance at least 50wpm with at least 95% accuracy

Licenses/certifications: medical terminology certificate OR equivalent during training (refundable deposit)

 

Mental capacity:

LEVEL3=requires intermittent high concentration and high attention; generally, task approach is consistent, but number of steps/variables create causes-for-error without close attention

 

Physical capacity:

Sitting 25%, Standing 50%, and Walking 25% of time

Lifting, pushing, or pulling 20% of time; max 15lbs of computer, tablet, charger, and paper

 

Machines/equipment:

Laptop computer--90% of time; high hand/eye coordination

Telephone--10% of time; normal hand/eye coordination

 

On-the-job travel:

10-50% of time traveling, excluding regular commute to primary location(s)

 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Healthcare clinic setting with frequent exposure to contagious patients, possible exposure to infectious diseases (bloodborne and airborne), and proxy risk from biohazard waste and equipment; required universal precautions and attention to privacy; recommended attention to prevent repetitive use injuries
