Full-Time - 10 Month Position

Reports To: Building Trades Supervisor and Instructor

YouthBuild Philadelphia Charter School is a tuition-free, public charter high school, with a singular focus on supporting youth aged 17-20 who have been pushed out of traditional schools. During our 1-year alternative program, Youthbuild facilitates a warm, loving culture that uses a variety of structures to build community, such as a restorative-justice approach to discipline, weekly community meetings, and school-wide service projects. Students are empowered to attain their high school diploma and vocational certifications, while receiving unconditional support by the staff around them. The Opportunity: 


The YouthBuild Building Trades Assistant is professional and passionate about supporting novice construction students how to conduct themselves both inside and outside of the work environment. Above all, safety is prioritized when working with heavy machinery and power tools and the Building Trades Assistant provides a high level of expertise to this area ensuring that students are monitored for safety while on the job site. Outside their daily duties, they are a mentor to 4-5 students, to administer and guarantee their success here at Youthbuild.

  • You have 5 or more years of construction work experience, additional experience in a school setting and/or working with youth, preferred.
  • You are flexible and can work in a variety of settings and teams.
  • You are proficient in using technology and have experience in Google Suites and PowerSchool, preferred.

What You’ll Do: 

  • You will supervise a worksite of 12-20 students as they work on a range of construction projects.
  • You will assist the Building Trades Instructor in teaching the proper use and safe handling of all hand tools, power tools, materials handling and equipment to students.
  • You will assist the Building Trades instructor in teaching carpentry and construction fundamentals that includes but not limited to - safety, deconstruction/demolition, rough framing, drywall, painting, finish carpentry, etc.
  • You will close the worksite; securing materials and close out the learning with students in a restorative circle to reflect on learning and plan next steps.
  • You will model professional behavior for students at all times.
  • You will participate in a highly collaborative, fluid school culture that requires strong interpersonal skills and flexibility.
