Greater Nashua Mental Health is looking for a full-time ASL/English Interpreter to join our Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services Team! This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of a dynamic team of diverse deaf mental health providers as well as mental health interpreters. The ASL/English Interpreter provides direct interpreting to ensure effective communication access between Deaf and Hard of Hearing employees and non-signing employees, GNMH clients as well as collateral contacts outside the Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services Team.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provides effective English/American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation for staff of GNMH, including their interactions with non-signing clients and other GNMH staff, internal meetings, trainings, orientations and off-site meetings that GNMH staff are required to attend as part of their job duties and any additional activities that D/HH staff might participate in here at GNMH in accordance with state and federal accessibility laws and guidelines.
- Provides effective English/ASL interpretation for Deaf and Hard of Hearing clients of GNMH, including their appointments with non-signing staff, counseling sessions when determined by the clients' clinical teams, and any other meetings that D/HH clients and their family members may participate in here at GNMH in accordance with state and federal accessibility laws and guidelines.
- Supports the Language Access team in defining current and ongoing GNMH language access needs for clients and staff.
- Supports the Language Access team in creating and evaluating current processes and workflows across the Agency to ensure language is not a barrier to access and present solutions when necessary.
- When needed, supports the maintenance of schedules of staff and contracted interpreters; contacts affected parties in a timely manner when scheduling challenges arise.
- Serves as consultative resource and advocate on behalf of staff and clients who require language services and/or accessibility.
- Supports the Language Access Coordinator and Deaf Services Program Manager in evaluating and maintaining systems to support identification of clients that require language access.
- Reviews documentation of client interpreting services for accuracy.
- Reliable ability to travel statewide to interpret in a variety of community-based settings.
- Performs other duties or special projects as required or as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in American Sign Language/English Interpreting or related field.
- NH Interpreting license.
- Fluency in American Sign Language with ability to express ideas clearly in ASL and spoken/written English.
- Competent in practicing relevant Codes of Professional Conduct, Codes of Ethics in daily work.
- In-depth knowledge of Deaf cultural norms.
- Willing to work within interpreting teams and with diverse communication and language skills among staff and clients.
- Flexible, willing to learn, and anticipates the needs of self and team.
- Knowledge/training in fundamentals of mental health interpreting is desired, however, specialized training opportunities will be available
- Knowledge of and ability to use Microsoft Office products and videoconferencing platforms (Teams, Word, Outlook, Excel, etc.).
- Strong collaborating skills, and an ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to be flexible with regard to workload and assignments.
- Ability to problem solve and exercise ethical judgment, including reaching out to supervisor and team to navigate challenging decisions.
