Description

Purpose of Position:

  • Primary focus of work is Ship and Boat Carpentry related to maintenance, preservation and restoration


Essential Functions:  

  • Proficient in Maintenance and Restoration tasks related to watercraft preservation
  • High level of proficiency in heavy timber ship carpentry and joinery
  • Experience and ability to caulk and paint vessels in a traditional manner
  • Perform work in support of other areas of Museum
  • Represent Mystic Seaport Museum in a professional manner at all times
  • To teach and pass on skills to others through a variety of methods


Requirements

Qualifications:  

  • Minimum of five years’ experience in a variety of ship and boat maintenance, preservation or restoration projects. Time spent in formal Boat Building Programs may replace up to three years’ experience
  • Possess a high degree of skill within the above areas of responsibility
  • Willingness to work flexible hours in performance of responsibilities
  • Willingness to work weekends on a rotational basis
  • Willingness and ability to work with non-professional shipyard volunteers
  • Ability and willingness to record, log and document work performed
  • Ability to work unsupervised on assigned tasks and projects
  • Possess a high degree of flexibility regarding scheduling of projects, tasks and responsibilities
  • Job requires bending, lifting, climbing, and prolonged physical activity and exposure to all weather conditions
  • Hold a valid driver’s license
  • Hold or be willing to achieve a State Safe Boating Certificate
  • Ability in the operation of forklifts and manlifts
  • A high degree of knowledge and skill in application of traditional marine coatings
  • Completion of high school or college degree program desirable

A high level of aptitude and ability in the following areas:

  • Carpentry as related to traditional watercraft preservation and new construction
  • Caulking and painting vessels in a traditional manner 
  • Heavy timber sawmilling and material handling
  • Research related to watercraft preservation and specific assignments
  • Interest in and the ability to interact, communicate with and lead Museum Visitors and others in programs related to tasks of maritime preservation
  • Interest in furthering the broader goals of Mystic Seaport Museum
