The Federation is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual with a variety of skill sets who wants to join a team working to build a new model of 21st century and next generation Federation engagement.
The Senior Director of Foundation Partnerships will manage and direct meaningful relationships with all foundation partners (existing and new), including external private/family foundations and (internal) Supporting Foundations. The person in this role is responsible for developing new and strengthening existing foundation partnerships that positively impact the Jewish community in the Bay Area, Israel, and globally. The Senior Director of Foundation Partnerships provides oversight of the Federation’s Supporting Foundations team, guiding and inspiring efforts to ensure that we are providing exemplary foundation management and operational services and adding value to our portfolio of 30+ Supporting Foundations’ grantmaking. Additionally, the Senior Director of Foundation Partnerships is responsible for directly soliciting select institutional gifts and must become knowledgeable about the breadth and depth of the needs of the Jewish community as well as the priorities and programs of the Federation. \
This position has a minimum of two direct reports, with oversight of a 5+ person team.
- Cultivate foundation partnerships (with new and existing foundations) that are relevant to thriving Jewish communities in the Bay Area and Israel, including deepening foundations’ understanding of and interests in Federation’s programs, priorities, and product offerings (e.g. impact lending).
- Develop, manage, strengthen, and expand high-impact partnerships with Federation Supporting Foundations and external private/family foundations, including coordinating quarterly meetings with executive level professionals working at local Jewish foundations.
- Identify and develop new strategic and collaborative funding opportunities/initiatives with current and potential partners and generate at least $2 million in grant funding annually.
- Represent Federation at meetings, conferences and technical convenings to remain appraised of philanthropic trends and Jewish issues and explore new opportunities for engagement.
- Develop and oversee the implementation of procedures and strategies to strengthen foundation relationships, including systems, operations, financial management, and reporting.
- Manage and supervise the day-to-day operations of the Foundations team, including mentoring and motivating the Foundations team to meet, measure, and evaluate goals and performance as well as may manage increasingly complex funding relationships and grants.
- Provide oversight and quality assurance in the development of foundation grant proposals and grant reports.
- Collaborate with other Federation departments on cross-organizational special projects, initiatives, and lead special projects, as appropriate.
- Support productive and collaborative partnerships inside Federation in the design and delivery of compelling philanthropy experiences, and work in close collaboration with the finance and operations teams to provide excellent customer service, including the timely processing of gifts and grant recommendations.
- Track and present impact of Foundations’ work.
- Keep current on latest trends and issues in philanthropy, grantmaking best practices, and related technologies.
QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES)
- Knowledge of and appreciation for the Jewish community, its customs, and practices, preferred.
- Enjoys coaching and managing others to high levels of performance and professional fulfillment.

- Flexible, nimble, and entrepreneurial in an evolving philanthropic landscape.
- Demonstrated success in soliciting and closing major gifts.
- The ability to present a strong and recognizable commitment to the enrichment of the Jewish community is required.
- Sound judgment and discretion in handling and securing confidential donor and financial information.
- Understands organizational structure and works through administrative systems; asks questions and takes initiative to facilitate work being completed.
- Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work collegially with internal professionals and external leaders of other organizations.
- Must be willing to travel the extent of the Federation’s service area (Sonoma County to Palo Alto) to visit agencies, attend volunteer committee meetings, and attend key community events; national conferences and meetings and Israel, as necessary.
- Demonstrated ability to organize, set priorities and delegate responsibilities to motivate lay leadership and professionals and to lead the successful implementation and completion of multiple and varied projects and programs.
- An excellent communicator verbally and in writing.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively across departments and disciplines.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Master’s degree in a related field highly preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 7-10 years of related experience in nonprofit management or philanthropy. Community foundation experience preferred.
- A minimum of five years of managing teams as well as leadership experience in relationship management (philanthropy, fundraising, advancement) with increasing levels of responsibility.
- Experience in philanthropy advisory preferred.
- Expertise in relationship management, stewardship and cultivation, and/or service-related experience with a particular focus on providing services to high net worth individuals.
- Proven experience in fundraising, including face-to-face solicitations, and strategic relationship management.
