Surgical technologists are allied health professionals, working closely with the surgical team to promote safe patient care, ensure all instruments and equipment are in good working order, and facilitate a smooth procedure with minimal complications. Surgical technologists function as the scrub person in the Operating or procedure room, using robust knowledge of anatomy, surgical procedures and implementation, tools, and technologies, to facilitate a physician’s performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.


Key Responsibilities: 

  • Familiarity with surgical instruments, equipment, and trays. 
  • Comfortable assisting with a variety of surgical procedures.
  • Functions as a surgical scrub during operative and other invasive procedures
  • Remains calm under pressure, responds to life-saving situations as needed.
  • At the end of the procedure, prepares surgical instruments at the point of care (Operating or procedure room) according to policy/protocol, prior to transport to decontamination.
  • Safely transports equipment to the decontamination areas using appropriate biohazard containers.
  • Assists with post-procedure cleaning of the operative or other invasive procedure rooms and the preparation of the room for subsequent patients.
  • Follows AST, AORN and other best practice standards and guidelines for perioperative/surgical technology practice.
  • Maintains privacy and confidentiality of individuals and health information.
  • Promotes and role models collegial, collaborative relationships with all members of the interprofessional team.
  • Provides age-specific, culturally competent, ethical care within legal standards of practice.
Requirements

Physical Requirements:

  • All applicants must be physically able to satisfactorily perform the duties of the position

Minimum Requirements:

  • Associates Degree or certificate in a healthcare or related field
  • At least two years of experience in a healthcare setting
  • Education in medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Patient-focused, and team oriented
