Seasonal Staff - Camp Mary Elizabeth 

Located in Spartanburg, SC - day camp and outdoor pool facilities. 

Dates for day camp: May 28, 2024, through June 28, 2024 

Schedule: Monday – Friday; 7:45 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Girls entering first grade through sixth grade will enjoy days packed with adventure and friendship.  Day camp with us includes traditional camp activities like hiking, games, archery, campfires, and skill building, as well as theme focused activities for each age group. 


POSITION SUMMARY

Day Camp General Counselors work with their assigned age group to provide hands-on, interactive activities such as crafting, science experiments, and theme-based activities. While at camp, our General Counselors will be role models for our campers – showing enthusiasm, kindness, and creativity. Along with another counselor, you will facilitate archery sessions, create one-of-a-kind tie dye, rock a dance party, and roast tasty s’mores! You can expect to spend your summer days hiking camp, outside playing games on the play field, and trying something new each day.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS 

  • No prior Girl Scout experience required to apply.
  • Must be at least 18 years old. 
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Successful reference check, drug screen and background check.
  • Previous experience working in a day camp environment or leading programs with school aged youth is preferred.
  • First Aid and CPR certification required (available during staff trainings)
  • Ability to work non-standard hours.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a rustic outdoor environment.
  • Upon hire, must hold personal membership in the Girl Scout organization and subscribe to the tenets of the Girl Scout Promise and Law.
  • Must have personal transportation and the ability to drive. Must possess a valid driver’s license, maintain personal auto insurance which meets the council insurance company’s requirement for coverage.
  • Individuals who are Bilingual (Spanish) are encouraged to apply. 
  • Assists in the smooth functioning of summer camp by performing other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Implement an outstanding outdoor-based summer day camp experience to engage girls in the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. 
  • Lead and assist with the teaching, supervision, and organization of campers in activities, meeting the intended camper outcomes. 
  • Serve as a role model and guide campers in appropriate behaviors, language, attitudes, and activities by maintaining child’s self-esteem, helping girls develop individual responsibility, and facilitating communication, conflict resolution, and problem solving. 
  • Ensure delivery of camp programs in a safe and high-quality manner 
  • Ensure program site and supplies are properly maintained. 
  • Learn and implement the crisis management plan, including emergency procedures. 
  • Help campers follow directions and rules and enforce safety guidelines. 
  • Assist with cleaning, sanitation and care of supplies and equipment. 
  • Be aware of the ongoing medical needs of the campers. 
  • Understand the needs, abilities, and interests of campers to engage with them during camp hours. 

 ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Activities occur both inside and outside with employee subject to both environmental conditions to include fluctuating weather conditions (hot, cold, windy, etc.) as well as outdoor exposure to variety of vegetation.
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, bend, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, work with fingers, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and perform repetitive motions.
  • Ability to perform light work exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

COMPENSATION/BENEFITS

Summer seasonal employment is a unique experience and falls under the seasonal exemption standard categorized as “seasonal amusement or recreational establishment” by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the Department of Labor (DOL). This exempts the position from federal minimum and overtime wage requirements as we compensate a daily rate plus. The potential weekly earnings for this position is between $325 -$350 depending on experience, availability, scheduling, and any related certifications.   This is a seasonal position only with no eligibility for benefits.
