Located in Spartanburg, SC - day camp and outdoor pool facilities. 

Dates for day camp: May 28, 2024, through June 28, 2024 

Schedule: Monday – Friday; 7:45 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Girls entering first grade through sixth grade will enjoy days packed with adventure and friendship.  Day camp with us includes traditional camp activities like hiking, games, archery, campfires, and skill building, as well as theme focused activities for each age group. 


POSITION SUMMARY

The Camp Director leads the development and facilitation of all camp programs for girls ages 5-14 with weekly themed activities, games, crafts, and traditional camp activities.  The Director leads staff training, handles documentation and record-keeping, engages with parents, and manages health care and medical needs for the campers.  


While at camp, our Camp Director will be a role model for our staff and campers – showing enthusiasm, kindness, and creativity. Along with your staff, you will facilitate archery sessions, create one-of-a-kind tie dye, rock a dance party, and roast tasty s’mores! You can expect to spend your summer days hiking camp, outside playing games on the play field, and trying something new each day.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • No prior Girl Scout experience required to apply.
  • Must be at least 25 years old. 
  • HS Diploma or equivalent required (advanced education or college preferred).
  • Successful reference check, drug screen and background check.
  • A minimum of two years’ experience supervising staff and/or volunteers at a camp or similar environment.  
  • Experience developing, facilitating, and supervising school-aged children in recreational activities is preferred. 
  • Basic knowledge of safety and emergency procedures within a camp setting and the ability to respond appropriately to both emergency and non-emergency situations. 
  • Demonstrated skills in problem-solving and conflict management. 
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to make independent decisions; interact effectively with staff and parents; and work well with children. 
  • First Aid and CPR certification required (available during staff trainings)
  • Ability to work non-standard hours.
  • Ability an willingness to work in a rustic outdoor environment.
  • Upon hire, must hold personal membership in the Girl Scout organization and subscribe to the tenets of the Girl Scout Promise and Law.
  • Must have personal transportation and the ability to drive. Must possess a valid driver’s license, maintain personal auto insurance which meets the council insurance company’s requirement for coverage.
  • Individuals who are Bilingual (Spanish) are encouraged to apply. 
  • Assists in the smooth functioning of summer camp by performing other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Implement an outstanding outdoor-based summer day camp experience to engage girls in the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. 
  • Assist in the on-going planning and facilitating of program activities that meet the needs and interests of the participants, while adhering to the Girl Scout program and safety standards. 
  • Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement, and empowerment of youth. 
  • Observe and redirect camper behavior and communicate necessary directions or instructions.  
  • Manage the training and supervision of seasonal camp staff. Plan for, monitor, and address staff morale and resolve personnel conflicts. 
  • Ensure that camp facilities meet established standards before, during, and after camp sessions.  
  • Coordinate and work with the property staff to identify and resolve property issues and needs. 
  • Learn and implement the crisis management plan, including emergency procedures. 
  • Work closely with the Head Lifeguard to manage scheduling and operations of the Camp Mary Elizabeth Pool for day camp use.  
  • Work within the established budget to meet the operational and staffing needs of the camp, including equipment, supplies, and food. 

 ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Activities occur both inside and outside with employee subject to both environmental conditions to include fluctuating weather conditions (hot, cold, windy, etc.) as well as outdoor exposure to variety of vegetation.
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, bend, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, work with fingers, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and perform repetitive motions.
  • Ability to perform light work exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

COMPENSATION/BENEFITS

Summer seasonal employment is a unique experience and falls under the seasonal exemption standard categorized as “seasonal amusement or recreational establishment” by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the Department of Labor (DOL). This exempts the position from federal minimum and overtime wage requirements as we compensate a daily rate plus. The potential weekly earnings for this position is between $450-$500 depending on experience, availability, scheduling, and any related certifications.   This is a seasonal position only with no eligibility for benefits.
