1 Saturday required: July 27 – camp clean-up day

POSITION SUMMARY 

The Equestrian Assistant will organize and conduct, in conjunction with the Equestrian Manager and Equestrian Lead Counselor, a complete, progressive horsemanship program. The incumbent will assist with an instructional and recreational riding program, and horse care. This position reports to the Equestrian Manager.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • No prior Girl Scout experience required to apply.
  • Must be at least 18 years old. 
  • HS Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Successful reference check, drug screen and background check.
  • Experience teaching horsemanship lessons and equestrian care to children. 
  • Experience caring for a herd (including feeding, grooming, barn cleaning, implementing horse programs, ordering supplies, medical attention, etc.). 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to make independent decisions, interact effectively with staff and volunteers, and work well with children.   
  • First Aid and CPR certification required (available during staff training).    
  • Upon hire, must hold personal membership in the Girl Scout organization and subscribe to the tenets of the Girl Scout Promise and Law.
  • Ability to drive preferred but is not required. Drivers must have personal transportation and the ability to drive. Must possess a valid driver’s license, maintain personal auto insurance which meets the council insurance company’s requirement for coverage.

  •  Assists in the smooth functioning of summer camp by performing other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  •  Assist in all areas of equestrian programs and operations including duties with feeding, grooming, cleaning stalls, arenas, and paddocks, maintaining tack and other equipment. 
  • Assist in all equine program lessons including riding lessons, ground lessons, and stable management, as assigned by the Equestrian Manager. 
  • Participate in general camp activities and girl supervision as needed during non-equestrian time. 
  • Work alongside the Equestrian Manager and Equestrian Lead Counselor in maintaining the equestrian area and equipment, facilitating the program, caring for the herd, and supervising girls while in this program area. 
  • Learn and implement the crisis management plan, including emergency procedures. Be aware of the ongoing medical needs of the campers. 
  • Incumbent will primarily sleep in a girl unit (sometimes in a separate counselor cabin, and sometimes in an attached but separate room) and is expected to help with nighttime supervision and morning routines. 
  • Work a rotating schedule as assigned by the Equestrian Manager to feed and care for the herd on non-camp days. Adjusted, alternate time off will be provided during the week. 

ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Activities occur both inside and outside with employee subject to both environmental conditions to include fluctuating weather conditions (hot, cold, windy, etc.) as well as outdoor exposure to variety of vegetation and animals.
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, bend, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, work with fingers, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and perform repetitive motions.
  • Ability to perform light work exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • Is required to regularly pick up saddles, supporting equipment to include horse blankets and bridles that may independently and/or combined exceed 25 lbs.
  • Is required to also assist riders (lifting at times, depending on needs) up into a saddle as well as assist with dismounting riders as needed and requested.

  

COMPENSATION/BENEFITS

Summer seasonal employment is a unique experience and falls under the seasonal exemption standard categorized as “seasonal amusement or recreational establishment” by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the Department of Labor (DOL). This exempts the position from federal minimum and overtime wage requirements as we compensate a daily rate plus. The potential weekly maximum earnings for this position is between $250 - $280 depending on experience, availability, scheduling, and any related certifications. Seasonal staff are eligible for a performance based bonus that will be paid after the first 4 weeks of summer camp and at the end of summer camp.  This is a seasonal position only with no eligibility for benefits.
