General Description
The Faison Residence features 45 apartments, approximately a third of the apartments are set aside for adults with autism and other developmental disabilities. The remaining apartments are rented to the public, making this an integrated community. The Lead Community Support Counselor helps provide development of daily life skills and health and recreation programs. Manages all services and activities occurring at their assigned program, and directs the workflow of other CSC’s working at their location. Responsible for teaching new skills and managing behaviors to maximize independence in activities of daily living. Work location is in a variety of community based settings, but primarily occurs in the apartment building. This position is Essential to the daily operations of the program and individuals in this role are deemed Essential Personnel requiring inclement weather related and crisis availability.
Experience Requirements
One – two years of prior experience in a position of similar scope, preferred
Must have a current, valid 32-hour certificate through DBHDS for medication training or
Medication Aide certificate including the 4-hour insulin module
Ability to recognize natural teaching opportunities and act upon them
Ability to handle all aspects of personal care with sensitivity and caring
Ability to allay maladaptive (sometimes aggressive) behaviors while maintaining calm and composure
Flexibility in assigned working locations
Ability to communicate through verbal and written mediums
Ability to observe, ask questions, listen actively, and give and accept feedback effectively
A high energy level, adaptability, assertiveness, patience and ability to work in a team environment
Operation of a motor vehicle is required which includes proof of a valid drivers license, an ability to maintain automobile liability insurance as required by state law in Virginia and an ability to qualify as a driver under Faison insurance guidelines
Must live within a 15 mile radius from the Faison Residence
Education Requirements
High school degree or equivalent required
Essential Physical Requirements
Lift 50 pounds (and keep back straight while doing so)
Bend at all joints fluently
Move in and out of and maintain a kneeling position for up to five minutes
Reach in all directions
Grasp using both hands
Move quickly in both confined and open spaces to avoid safety issues
Run in order to retrieve an individual who is moving quickly away from staff
Maintain balance while lowering to a half squat position
