  • Kibeta English Medium Primary School (KEMPS) is ten minutes from the town of Bukoba. 
  • The North-Western Diocese are nearby. The Diocese is responsible for this school.

Timeline:

  • ELCA Orientation and ELCA Summer Missionary Conference (US based): July 2024
  • Start Date - July 22, 2024

Assignment Includes:  

  • Teach English, grammar and reading monitoring monthly term tests and exams. 
  • Be creative and flexible.
  • Work with the local teachers on teaching methodology.  
  • Develop a monthly communication virtual newsletter for ELCA congregations in the Metropolitan New York Synod and other synods across the ELCA.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 
Requirements
  • A teaching certificate is required with classroom experience, preferred.
  • BA/BS in Education is required. 
  • Willingness to share professional pedagogy with local teachers. 
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out responsibilities with an appreciation of other cultures and adaptability to different standards and practices.
  • Christian faith, a commitment to the mission of the church, openness to various expressions of Christian faith and respect for people of other faiths. Respect for beliefs, values and customs of church and culture, where assigned.
  • Well-developed inter-personal skills demonstrating understanding and compassion.
  • Ability to work within the framework of a local administration. 
  • Adaptable and flexible with a sense of humor.  
  • Live and serve in a way which reflects the vision and expectations of the ELCA 

All ELCA global personnel must participate in mission interpretation and storytelling. This includes:

  • Quarterly newsletters to sponsoring congregations and individuals. 
  • Virtual visits throughout the year with sponsoring congregations and individuals. 

Terms and Conditions  

  • This position is a full-time Shared Personnel Placement with ELCA Service and Justice and the Metropolitan New York Synod. 
  • A candidate will get an annual stipend, health insurance, Social Security and travel allowance paid by the Metropolitan New York Synod. 
  • Teacher will attend a short course in Kiswahili, tuition and textbook fees are covered. Teacher will participate in an orientation program both in the United States and in Tanzania. 
  • Two-year commitment with possible renewal. 
  • This position is on a Letter of Agreement with the candidate, Metropolitan New York Synod, and the ELCA.

  • Both can serve together if both are teachers and must complete an application for this position. 


Physical Effort

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone. This position requires sitting for long periods of time. Employee will occasionally need to lift boxes or materials up to 15 pounds. Reasonable accommodations can be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
