Summary:

A member of the Surgical Services team who works under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse. Responsibilities include assisting with all aspects of the care of patients in Surgery and the performance of sterile processing duties.

Surgical Technologists (ST) are allied health professionals, who are an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients in a variety of settings.


ST work under medical supervision to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. ST work under the supervision of a surgeon and a Registered Nurse to ensure that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions to maximize patient safety. ST possess expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

Requirements

Education, Training or Certifications Required:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of surgical technology.
  • National certification required.
  • Biannual CPR certification.
  • Participates in required elective clinical education.
  • Membership in professional organization encouraged (Association of Surgical Technologists).

Experience Required:

  • One year experience as Certified Surgical Technologist.

Special Requirements:

  • Emotional maturity and good people skills required.
  • Ability to work calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to cope with stress.

Cognitive Requirements:

  • Ability to prioritize workload.
  • Ability to evaluate/anticipate surgeon's needs and communicate same to Circulating RN.
  • Ability to take in, process and apply technical knowledge to a wide variety of surgical procedures.
  • Ability to learn new skills and incorporate them into daily practice.

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to stand/walk more than 8 hours per day due to call requirements.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 25-50 lbs.
  • Must have adequate hearing, vision, and manual dexterity.
  • Must be in good physical condition to meet the demands of an active position, including ability to work for extended periods of time due to call responsibilities.
  • Must be physically able to perform CPR.
  • Must pass employee physical prior to orientation to position.
  • General health must be such as to regularly work scheduled hours.
