Under the general supervision of the Director of Student Services, the English Language Learner (ELL) Teacher will facilitate ELL student success and growth, in academic and communication skills, through implementing curricular best practices. The ELL specialist will also provide the classroom teacher with assistance in providing instruction to students whose first language is not English. The documentation of lessons executed, and student progress/outcomes will be required. The ELL teacher will address individual student needs by creating a flexible, safe and inclusive learning environment. Offering feedback to students, teachers, families, and leadership will be a critical facet of the role. The primary focus will be students in grades Kindergarten through 4th grade.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates knowledge of first and second language acquisition theory, as well as knowledge of second language learning patterns and best practices in English language development. 
  • Plans and delivers lessons in English language development that are in accordance with the school mission. Develops lesson plans and instructional materials for English language development that translate into positive learning experiences for students and promote growth. 
  • Reflects an awareness and acceptance of cultural differences exhibited by the students and their families.
  • Possesses characteristics necessary for functioning as an advocate for limited English-speaking students, within the school, as well as serving as a liaison between the school and the home.
  • Promotes a learning environment that is safe and conducive to both individualized and small group instruction.
  • Conducts ongoing progress monitoring of student learning and adjusts instructional methods to fit individual students’ needs.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students, parents, and faculty.
  • Coordinates with other professional staff members, especially within grade levels served, to evaluate and assess curriculum, and participates in various staff meetings.
  • Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids, and other supplies and equipment in order to best serve students.
  • Utilizes personal skills necessary for the improvement of student attitudes toward learning and school.
  • May supervise students in activities that take place out of the classroom, during the school day.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Director of Student Services, Educational Leadership, and Head of School.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university
  • State of Michigan Certification as a Teacher (Out of state reciprocity will be considered as well)
  • Endorsement in ELL (NS) preferred or enrollment in ELL (NS) or bi-lingual (YF) program required.
  • Hebrew speaking is preferred.
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of elementary school curriculum and concepts
  • Independent school experience preferred. 
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with faculty, staff, leadership, and parents. 
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail required.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Positive attitude, flexible approach, team-centered, and strong values needed.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
