Description

Surgical Services is looking for a part time (0.5 FTE) Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) to work in Short Stay.  This position would work Monday through Friday, shifts starting between 6:30 am to 8:00 am.  


Short Stay Surgery CNA would be involved in pre and post-op care of surgery, endoscopy and pain patients. 


Certified Nursing Assistants are important members of the nursing team. They participate in the implementation of nursing care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The Certified Nursing Assistant provides direct, hands-on care to patients in various settings throughout the hospital. This position also includes essential duties such as documentation in the electronic medical record, clear communication and clerical related tasks. 


 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

1. Certified Nursing Assistant 

  • Provide direct individualized nursing care to an assigned group of patients based on the application of scientific principles, under the supervision of a registered nurse
  • Participate in team conferences, share knowledge, information and ideas among team members
  • Communicate frequently with the primary nurse, charge nurse and/or house supervisor regarding patients’ physical and mental conditions
  • Record information in electronic medical record concisely, accurately and completely (temperature, pulse and respiration rates, food and fluid intake and output, daily weights, activities, swing bed, etc)
  • Float as requested by the charge nurse or nurse manager to patient care areas
  • Listen to patient concerns and bring to the attention of the professional nursing staff
  • Answer call light and intercom system to determine patients’ needs
  • Serve and collect food trays and feed patients requiring help
  • Participates as a team member in implemented patient care plans as directed
  • Transport or assist patients to walk
  • Turn and reposition bed rest patients, alone or with assistance
  • Change bed linens, run errands, direct visitors and answer telephone 
  • Respond to patient needs in a timely manner 
  • Demonstrate use of safety equipment

2. Health Unit Coordinator

  • Answer telephone calls in Unit, relay information to staff and patients
  • Distribute mail, newspaper and flowers
  • Understand all hospital departments’ locations, directing visitors and ancillary staff to patient rooms or other areas
  • Answer patient call lights and transfer patient requests to nurse
  • Understand and operate equipment used at nurse’s station; telephone, ambulance radio, pager, fax machine, copy machine, weather radio
  • Compiles patient chart for new admission
  • Communicate with other departments regarding new orders, scheduling special tests and consults
  • Compiles daily census of patients
  • Maintain necessary records and logs, daily recording necessary information in patient chart
  • Relieves coworkers for breaks as needed
  • Promptly report need for repairs or related services to maintenance
  • May be called upon to “record” in ER upon nurse’s discretion
  • Take on preceptor role if requested

3. Maintain unit order, cleanliness and safety

  • Keep unit and patient rooms orderly by completing checklists to ensure stocking and unit maintenance is completed
  • Open room for new admission, stock with appropriate supplies 
  • Send work orders as needed
  • Initiate additional cleaning as necessary e.g., defrosting refrigerator, organizing cupboards
  • Clean and sanitize patient rooms, bathrooms, examination rooms and other patient areas
  • Restock patient rooms with personal hygiene items
  • Stock and issue medical supplies
  • Stripping of patient’s room after discharge
Requirements

Education & Licensure: 

  • Current WI Nurse Aide Registry required
  • BLS certification for adults and pediatrics

Experience:

  • 1+ years prior CNA experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 

  • Excellent communication and listening skills
  • Maintain integrity of highly confidential business and patient information
  • Display and promote high standards of ethical conduct and behaviors consistent with organizational standards

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Prolonged periods of standing, bending, and reaching
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times
