Description


This is a part-time position funded for a maximum of 400 hours at a rate of $12/hour. Twenty hour a week commitment is preferred. Two technicians will be hired under this position. 


The Atlanta Botanical Garden invites applications for the position of Collections Technician in the Southeastern Center of Conservation within the Department of Conservation & Research at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. The successful candidate will work under the direction of the Senior Collections Technician. This position is necessary to complete the objectives of the Institute of Museum and Library Services funded project, “Safeguarding the Atlanta Botanical Garden’s Conservation Collections”. 

Requirements

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Bag emergent flowers and perform hybridizations as directed
  • Collect pollen, seed, leaf tissue, and herbarium vouchers 
  • Maintain detailed records of all collections according to standard operating procedures

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be organized, detail-oriented, and adaptable
  • Enrolled in a college, technical, or university program majoring in Plant Biology, Biology, or similar OR a holds a Bachelor’s degree in Plant Biology, Biology, or related field and has graduated in the last four years
  • Minimum of one year of technical greenhouse, nursery, or seed laboratory experience is preferred
  • Prior experience with artificial hybridizations, seed, or pollen collection is preferred
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License and good driving record

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to spend long periods of time working outside in Georgia working in a wide range of weather and temperature extremes
  • Ability to take careful notes and improve project organization 
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50lbs

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to effectively respond to multiple, changing and often conflicting priorities is essential
  • Must be able to effectively interact with the general public and co-workers and peer professionals
