The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) is recruiting a Staff Accountant responsible for processing day-to-day financial transactions, including activities related to accounts payable and receivable, and performing tasks related to the monthly close process in compliance with financial policies and GAAP standards. This position also provides support to the finance team on various tasks related to the annual audit, tax reporting, budgeting, and other special projects as needed.
The Staff Accountant will have flexibility with GFOA’s hybrid work environment with the expectation to be in the Chicago office 2-3 days a week on average. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Accounts Receivable and Cash Receipt Management
- Assist with accurate matching of cash receipts to open invoices within the association membership software and other software programs.
- Generate A/R invoices.
- Serve as back up for posting daily cash receipt batches in membership database.
Accounts Payable Management
- Serve as back up for processing accounts payable (A/P) invoices, including expense reports and corporate credit card purchases, into the accounting system.
Journal Entries and Reconciliations
- Prepare monthly journal entries.
- Perform monthly balance sheet reconciliations.
General Ledger Maintenance
- Collaborate with the Accounting Manager to maintain the general ledger and other essential accounting records required for preparing accurate monthly financial statements.
Research and Problem Solving
- Investigate and resolve discrepancies in accounts payable, accounts receivable and other accounting transactions to maintain accuracy in financial reporting
Special Projects and Support
- Provide support to the finance team on ad hoc tasks, including annual audit preparation, tax reporting, budgeting, and other duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate will have a record of successful financial roles within an organization. As an effective team member, the Staff Accountant will bring a record of success in building relationships and communicating to a variety of constituents. Because the Finance team is small, but mighty, the Staff Accountant will also be willing to wear multiple hats and assist with other duties as assigned in addition to the above.
An undergraduate degree in accounting and 3-5 years of relevant experience is desired. Previous experience in not-for-profit or association environment is preferred, however, candidates with a variety of experiences and backgrounds are encouraged to apply, even if they don’t meet all requirements.

Starting Salary Range
$62,000-72,000
