Structural Engineering Intern

Origin Design is continually seeking highly qualified individuals to enhance our staff and better serve our clients. We are currently hiring a summer Structural Engineering Intern. This internship offers the opportunity to work on a variety of structural/architectural projects, including commercial, education, industrial, residential, environmental and bridge structures, as well as performing structural assessments. You will be exposed to a wide variety of design techniques and construction materials including reinforced concrete, steel, wood and aluminum. The position will be based out of our Dubuque office and the employment term is for the 2025 summer. Future internships and opportunities upon graduation may also be available.

Position Responsibilities.

  • Work under the direction of a Licensed Professional Engineer.
  • Research design criteria including building codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide documentation of existing conditions.
  • Perform engineering assignments requiring application of engineering formulas, standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Prepare structural calculations incorporating hand calculations to support software results.
  • Prepare document review comments and detail sketches to convey the design intent.
  • Develop design aids as productivity tools for staff use (e.g., spreadsheets, etc.).
  • Assist support staff in producing construction documents using Revit.
  • Review construction submittals for conformance with contract documents.


Position Requirements. 

  • Currently enrolled in a Civil Engineering or Architectural Engineering undergraduate or graduate academic program.
  • Desire to pursue a Master of Science Degree in Structural Engineering is a plus.
  • Completed course work related to structural engineering design.
  • Practical experience with Revit preferred.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with clients and staff.
