Under the guidance of the Camp Director, the Behavior Specialist will work directly with counselors to assist campers in need of extra assistance. The position is responsible for demonstrating YMCA leadership competencies to ensure the mission, purpose, image and core values of the YMCA of Greater Rochester is conveyed.


SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Work directly with Camp Director to review all camper records regarding medical, social/emotional, and physical needs of campers.

• Work directly with campers in need of extra assistance, communicates with unit heads and Camp Director on a regular basis regarding camper needs. Implement action plans with appropriate staff.

• Assist in the implementation of staff training. Lead pre-camp training for camp staff regarding medial, social/emotional, and physical needs. Provide continuous education for staff throughout the summer.

• Ensure all camper issues are handled and recorded in a timely and effective manner. Ensure parent communication is handled in a timely and professional manner.

• Proactively develop relationships with units and camper groups. Check in with all new campers weekly to assure they are feeling welcomed and supported at camp.

• Maintain consistent presence throughout camp and areas of responsibility.

• Participate in Camp activities, programs, and meetings.

• Assist with overall facility appearance.

• Attend all required meetings, branch events, and trainings.

• All other duties as assigned by the supervisor.



Requirements


• Must be at least 21 years or older and possess a high school diploma or GED

• At least three years’ course completion of bachelor’s degree in education, special education, or childhood development.

• Experience working with children who have special medical, social/emotional, or physical needs.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills required.

• Must be organized and be able to work independently, as well as collaboratively with the camp staff.

• Current certification in Standard First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer required; certifications must be valid/current before the first day of staff training and throughout the duration of your seasonal employment.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Ability to visibly observe children.

• Ability to stand for an extended period of time.

• Ability to lift up to 40 lbs and transport equipment from one location to another.

• Ability to demonstrate and lead activities. Ability to move around camp.

• Ability to hear distress signals even when distracted by noise and activity.

• Ability to work in a variety of environments, specifically those subject to extreme heat and humidity.

Salary Description
