We are currently seeking a motivated Retail, Mixed Use & Public Realm Planning, Managing Director to join our growing Place Consulting team.

Retail, Mixed Use & Public Realm Planning, Managing Director must have hands on experience in urban mixed-use environments, with a particular focus on public realm and ground plane retail/F&B environments. The candidate will be an accomplished, results-oriented leader with expertise in retail strategy, public realm, ground plane design, and placemaking. This role requires a solid grasp of retail dynamics, multi-family sectors, various product types, construction methodologies, and cost considerations. Responsible for guiding client projects, participating directly when necessary, the Managing Director will steer the team's strategic vision and oversee daily operations.


The Urban Design & Planning Team is a core component of the Streetsense Place Strategy consulting group that includes other specialties, such as Real Estate Strategy, Public Non-Profit, and Research. Collectively, these teams are committed to ensuring client success, meeting goals and metrics, and upholding Streetsense's standards for quality and financial performance. By partnering with the Place Strategy team, this role plays a pivotal part in crafting visionary place-based designs and strategic placemaking initiatives. It demands a collaborative mindset, as project solutions draw on insights from a broad spectrum of teams and disciplines.


RESPONSIBILITIES:


1. Client Strategies / Client Work:

  • Lead and develop client work product to meet client objectives.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between clients and the Urban Design and Place Strategy teams.
  • Is the subject matter expert leading key internal and external meetings.


2. Team Leadership and Talent Development:

  • Oversee talent management, recruitment, and employee engagement initiatives within the urban design team and foster a high-performance culture.
  • Conduct regular performance and compensation reviews to ensure competitiveness and employee satisfaction.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to team members to facilitate career growth and professional goal achievement.
  • Build effective cross-team collaboration and team-level mentorship


3. Operations:

  • Oversee all aspects of project successes, including project delivery, workflow, quality assurance, and resource planning.
  • Collaborate with other department directors to enhance operational efficiency and deliver consistent, remarkable client experiences.
  • Develop and manage key performance indicators to measure team performance and drive continuous improvement.
  • Identify opportunities for operational enhancement and implement innovative solutions to achieve operational excellence.


4. Business Development

  • Collaborate with other department directors to lead business development efforts in urban design and planning as a key voice and subject matter expert.
  • Participate in new business pitches and opportunities. 
Requirements
  • Master’s degree in Urban Planning and/or Bachelor’s degree in Architecture
  • 15+ years experience in retail, multifamily, and public realm urban planning/design, with a proven track record of success in business development and client strategy. 
  • Strong background in leading projects to execution. 
  • Architecture experience and background a plus.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire team members to achieve goals.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Strategic thinker with a strong business acumen and the ability to drive results in a fast-paced environment.
