Animal Care Technician - Part Time
Description

Responsible for daily cleaning and feeding of the animals at the animal shelter and other associated tasks. Weekend work will be required; Saturday or Sunday availability is required. This is a part-time, temporary position.

Requirements

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB INCLUDE:

 Animal Care:

  1. Follow protocol to clean and sanitize and set up animal enclosures
  2. Feed animals based on each animal’s size and diet instructions
  3. Ensure animals have clean, fresh water at all times
  4. Complete observation records for each enclosure cleaned
  5. Follow instructions regarding handling animals
  6. Wash dishes and laundry
  7. Lift large bags of cat litter, animal food and fill bins
  8. Sort and organize donations
  9. Mop floors
  10. Clean exam rooms and associated animal care areas 
  11. Communicate regularly with supervisors and coworkers to ensure that they are aware of any issues pertinent to their areas of responsibility
  12. Develop a basic working knowledge of the AWLA’s procedures, guidelines, and protocols for the safe handling of animals
  13. Other tasks as appropriate

 POSITION SPECIFICATIONS:

  1. Required:
  2. High school diploma or equivalent
  3. Proven ability to handle multiple tasks in a busy workplace environment
  4. Understanding of humane care and treatment of animals
  5. Fluent in English
  6. Preferred
  7. Proven ability to clean and pay attention to detail
  8. Experience in animal care
  9. Shelter experience

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. Indoors in a high noise, air-conditioned/heated building, outdoors at shelter in various weather conditions, or on-location for various activities
  2. Equipment use:

power washer, industrial dish washing machine, laundry machine, dryer, and cleaning supplies

  1. Work hours: 
  2. 8 am to noon, five days a week
  3. Weekend (Saturday or Sunday) and holiday hours will be required

 MENTAL, PHYSICAL AND COMMUNICATION DEMANDS:

  1. Regular exposure to animals, cleaning chemicals,, dust, animal feces/urine
  2. Ability to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds
  3. Ability to squat, bend, grip and be flexible to do so
  4. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
  5. Ability to work around pet dander, dust and other allergens without issue
  6. Regularly required to stand and walk
  7. Requires working alone or with minimal supervision - must be self-motivated
  8. Requires treating people and animals in a pleasant, courteous and professional manner
  9. Must have the ability to effectively communicate; verbally and written
  10. Ability to read and listen to instructions and follow them
  11. Ability to make observations and write them down
  12. Adherence to the AWLA’s policies and philosophies
