Summary:

The Development Lab Technician is responsible for the operation of laboratory and pilot scale equipment according to the prescribed procedures and internal standards. The Development Lab Technician supports production experiments led by Development department. The position will perform duties in the processing areas and conduct material testing on these products.

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Weigh and measure specific quantities of varying types of ingredients
  • Mix ingredients in proper sequence and proportions following processing instructions
  • Tend to the mixing and compounding equipment
  • Maintain control over time including moisture removal, temperature, pressure, rpm, energy, power, or other variables 
  • Observe gauges, meters, and panels to monitor and control the operating conditions of lab and pilot scaled mixers, kneaders, extruders, dryers and calciners 
  • Accurately report specific process characterizing outputs including peak time, energy, average power, and temperature 
  • Document observations, test results and operation conditions of lab and pilot process equipment 
  • Assess final compound visually and use appropriate batch testing equipment including moisture balances, curdmeter, and pH meter 
  • Make accurate batch adjustments to achieve final batch drop specifications 
  • Operate extrusion equipment, humidity and temperature controlled drying equipment
  • Measure and report extrudate speed, extrusion throughput, extruder temperature and extrusion pressure 
  • Maintain the operation condition of extruder, die hardware, and report equipment issues
  • Perform experimental tests including moisture, weight loss, and dimensional measurements on extrudates 
  • Maintain records to comply with internal requirements and standard operating procedures 
  • Support Development experiments on the production floor 
  • Other duties as assigned
Requirements

What You Will Bring:


Required Skills and Knowledge:

  • High school degree or equivalent
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work effectively independently
  • Good communication skills
  • Strong mathematical skills
  • Intermediate Excel
  • Associates or bachelor’s degree in science or related field

Preferred Skills and Knowledge:

  • Bachelor’s degree in science or related field 
  • Prior laboratory experience
  • Good analytical ability

Working Conditions:

  • Mechanical noise 
  • Dusty and dirty work environment due to materials and raw materials
  • Varying temperatures from warm to cool

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift push, pull, and carry 25 pounds frequently
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry 40 pounds occasionally
  • Standing for extended periods of time
  • Walking, stooping, bending, crouching, twisting, climbing, and kneeling

Work Schedule: 

1st Shift 7:00 AM-3:30 PM

2nd Shift 3:00 PM-11:30 PM
