Position Description

The HFHC Regional Program Coordinator will be an integral part of the Healthy Food in Health Care (HFHC) team at Health Care Without Harm, providing strategic coordination support to the Eastern regional projects. This role contributes to strategy, collaborates with partners in the field, provides coordination for key projects regarding food is medicine and values-based procurement, develops resources and organizes related support for the Health Care Without Harm and Practice Greenhealth network of 2,000 health care institutions.

Primary Objectives

This position will collaborate with national and regional program staff to engage hospitals and health care professionals and organizational and community partners to catalyze sector change. To provide coordination for HFHC activities through which health care facilities are engaged to make a positive impact on their communities while developing and testing strategies that are disseminated through Health Care Without Harm and Practice Greenhealth’s collective network for replication, scaling and greater impact. This position reports to a Regional Director and will work alongside other Regional Managers and consultants to implement the following:

  • Work with the Healthy Food in Health Care Regional Program Manager in the northeast to coordinate the partners and activities of the Food is Medicine (FIM) project: Scaling Values-Based Purchasing in Food is Medicine in Health Care across the Northeast Region and other Eastern Regional projects.
  • Coordinate communication and support for participating health care facilities to educate and engage them in modeling strategies for using procurement, and facilities operations and programs to advance a healthier food system through collective action - with a focus on food service professionals, administrators, facilities and sustainability professionals and allied clinicians (doctors, nurses, dietitians and others).
  • Coordinate communication and support to engage community food system partners, allied community and public health organizations, and hospital community wellness initiatives (including community benefits, employee wellness, insurers and other investment arms) to model strategies for health care’s investments in community health, wealth and resilience.
  • Work with value chains, including but not limited to food service management companies, group purchasing organizations, distributors, processors, aggregators, and producers to model and shift the institutional procurement system in favor of local, sustainable, and equitable food sourcing.

Essential Functions: 

  • Coordinate day to day operations of FIM Northeast project (coordinating the logistics, ongoing activities, and work plan).
  • Serve as point of contact for the FIM pilot groups and the liaison between the community groups and healthcare entities. This may include: supporting meeting coordination, progress tracking and reporting, and providing technical assistance.
  • Coordinate logistics of online, in-person, regional, and statewide meetings and trainings, which may include scheduling, agenda development, partner communications, facilitation, and/or note taking.
  • Act as liaison with healthcare partners, regional networks, and other programs or projects, keeping the regional and national teams informed of relevant information. 
  • Draft, edit and prepare correspondence, reports and other material using word processing, spreadsheets and/or databases. 
  • Reviews documents, reports and other materials to support research efforts. May provide information, research, statistics, and analysis for projects. May assist in preparation of grant proposals. 


Qualifications

  • Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree in food systems, public health, or planning preferred. Combined experience/education as a substitute for minimum education. 
  • Minimum Experience: Three years of experience providing program support in not-for-profit settings (graduate degree can compensate for some work experience).  
  • Preferred Field of Expertise: Experience with sustainable food systems advocacy and education; and institutional and public procurement systems and local food sourcing desired/preferred.
  • Preferred Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher.

Job-Specific Competencies: 

  • Knowledge of or experience in community and regional food systems and working with food organizations and businesses, including but not limited to food hubs, distributors, producers. Experience with institutional food purchasing and the health care sector preferred. 
  • Knowledge of or experience working across different states
  • Experience working across public and private sectors
  • Experience in supporting implementation of programs, organizing communications with staff and stakeholders, facilitating meetings and/or discussions, organizing events 
  • Experience in supporting implementation of advocacy campaigns, including coalition development and coordination, community outreach and organizing.
  • Ability to think strategically and creatively while organizing time efficiently
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills, excellent oral and written communication skills to carry out deliverables. 
  • Proficiency in computer and communications technologies including Microsoft Office Suite, relational database software, website management, social media.
  • Experience and comfort working in remote settings and with virtual teams.
