The Lahontan Cutthroat Trout (LCT) Fisheries Technician will report directly to TU’s LCT Biologist/Coordinator and perform a variety of tasks associated with recovering federally listed (Threatened) LCT in Nevada, California, and Oregon. The goal of these efforts is to manage hybridization and nonnative trout, and support state and federal partners in their LCT recovery work. You will work with a team of staff and other seasonal employees to install and manage weirs and PIT tag antennas, collect genetic samples, conduct robust population sampling, and manage hybridization and nonnative fish encroachment. You will develop a solid understanding of the issues LCT face throughout their range and how best to deal with them while gaining experience and coordinating with a variety of state and federal agency personnel. This position is comprised entirely of field work and will require extensive camping and hiking in primitive and undeveloped country. Pay is $19/hour. The summer position is based in Reno, Nevada and a vehicle is supplied for field work activities. No housing available.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Weir construction and management 30% 

• Population estimates, electrofishing, and surveying 60%

• General administrative and maintenance tasks 10%

• Work will be performed in alpine and desert environments from mid-May to Mid-September

• This position is non-supervisory and has no budget management responsibilities

• This is not an all-inclusive list of the duties and responsibilities of this position 


QUALIFICATIONS

• Extensive outdoor experience (camping, hiking, dry/primitive camping in undeveloped areas)

• Strong work ethic and the ability to remain disconnected from the rest of the world for short periods of time (up to 11 days)

• Angling experience preferred (much of the work will be sampling for genetics using hook and line)

• Electrofishing, PIT tagging, and fish handling experience preferred. We can teach fisheries techniques, but we can’t teach hard work ethic

• We’re looking for individuals that know they can do whatever is put in front of them regardless of the difficulty. Persistence, integrity, ingenuity, and a can do attitude are critical for this position.
