POSITION SUMMARY

This Summer Nursing Externship is a paid, seasonal opportunity for nursing students to care for children with complex medical conditions and learn nursing skills under the direct supervision of an experienced nurse. The Nurse Extern is a part of the Medical Team (Nursing & Medical Operations Director, Medical Director, Clinical Nurse Manager, Summer Staff Nurses, CNA) and medical volunteers. This position is ideal for someone who has a passion in pursuing the field of pediatric nursing and eager to learn. This position will report to the Nursing & Medical Operations Director. Position Dates: May-August. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Through collaboration with the: Medical Team (Nursing & Medical Operations Director, Medical Director Clinical Nurse Manager, Summer Staff Nurses, CNA), Volunteer Physicians/Providers, Volunteer nurses, and Program Camp Staff (Camp Director, Assistant Camp Directors); ensure that campers are provided with the highest quality of basic care needs.  
  • Will work within a student nurse’s scope of practice and precept with a nurse each camp session to learn and gain insight into pediatric nursing practices by observation. Malpractice will be under Nursing & Medical Operations Director.
  • Maintain and refill First Aid and AED bins throughout camp.
  • Refer to assigned nursing mentor/summer staff nurse with all medical/nursing question from campers or staff. 
  • Assist Medical Team to sort camper medications into appropriate locations upon camper arrival and departure, along with tasks as assigned by Clinical Nurse Manager or Nursing & Medical Operations Director. 
  • Provide basic care and ADLs for campers of their assigned cabin during each camp session.
  • Check on staff in quarantine including monitoring their well being and food delivery; and communicating to Nursing & Medical Operations Director or physician on call, of their health status. 
  • Participate in summer staff training and support volunteer orientation as directed by session mentor nurse, Clinical Nurse Manager or Director of Medical Operations.
  • Under the direction of the cabin nurse, support medication distribution as scheduled/prn to campers.
  • Assist with testing of Covid 19 for campers, staff, and volunteers as needed.
  • Documentation and record keeping of medical care, including data entry and use of online database and online logbook. Ensuring confidentiality of medical information and medical records at camp 
  • Work in partnership with the medical and camp team to provide support and education to camp staff and volunteers.
  • Support the volunteer orientation process and preparation as delegated by the Medical Team
  • Assist in maintaining inventory with Clinical Nurse Manager or Nursing Coordinator. 
Requirements

JOB COMPETENCIES

  • Be able to move items or people. This will require the strength and mobility to push, pull, lift, and carry.
  • Be able to identify emergency situations, either by seeing them happen, hearing cries for help, or hearing the emergency alert protocol.
  • Have the strength, endurance, and physical skills to respond quickly and appropriately to emergency situations, according to written emergency procedures and plans.
  • Be able to demonstrate or participate in camp activities as they supervise and instruct campers: this will require the ability to walk, sit, climb, kneel, crouch, stoop, and stand.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have Red Cross or AHA CPR Certification
  • Current enrollment in an accredited nursing program with completion of Pediatric rotation, or recent graduation
  • Related volunteer/work experience in a children’s camp or pediatric environment preferred
  • Must be a minimum of 19 years of age

  • Special Requirements: This is a residential position. Accommodation will be provided for the duration of the contract and meals will be provided while camp is in session.
