Compensation: $100,000 - $120,000 (DOE); Competitive benefit package

Since 1897, The Humane Society for Southwest Washington (HSSW) has been caring for the animals of Southwest Washington. We are a donor-supported non-profit with public contracts. Our mission is to rescue, return, restore, rehome, and reconnect one animal at a time. We also own and operate ReTails Thrift Store - the premiere Clark County thrifting experience. Proceeds from ReTails support animal care and shelter operations. 


HSSW is experiencing a period of exciting growth and has an annual budget of nearly $8 million, 100+ employees, 1,000 volunteers, and an engaged board of directors. Our Path Forward 2025 is an ambitious strategic plan focused on five strategic pillars: lifesaving pathways for animals, keeping people and pets together, thriving workforce, mission expansion and leveraging technology. Through these efforts we will build a low-cost community veterinary clinic, expand behavior care for owned pets and improve animal spaces at the shelter. People bring our mission to life each day. We are seeking a Vice President of Finance who can lead finance, facilities, and technology for the largest animal welfare organization in Southwest Washington. The successful candidate will be an experienced financial professional with the capacity to build upon our past success and take our financial management to the next level. This position is directly responsible for financial operations and budget, strategic growth strategies, facilities, and technology. Working closely with the President, finance, and investment committees the Vice President of Finance will serve on and play a critical role on the executive leadership team. 


Responsibilities

  • Ensure the accuracy and integrity of all financial and accounting activities of the organization. 
  • Serve as internal consultant to the President and Board of Directors on all financial matters, making recommendations on strategies to ensure the short- and long-term success of the organization.
  • Manage all budgets, forecasts, internal financial plans, and processes.
  • Support accounting, general ledger, and finance in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Manage organization’s investments.
  • Serve as staff liaison to the finance and investment committees. 
  • Participate in program development, expansion, and reviews to ensure financial viability.
  • Establish annual priorities and benchmarks and report annually on progress.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and optimize cash-flow and liquidity through regular reporting. 
  • Build and maintain relationships with banks, donors, vendors, and outside consultants.
  • Utilize technology to optimize all reporting and analytical functions.
  • Uphold all regulatory and legal compliance standards and requirements.
  • Keep up with trends in the financial industry through professional development.
  • In partnership with the Vice President of Development & Community Engagement, maintain accurate accounting of all restricted and unrestricted donations, its sources and distribution. 
  • Manage the facility team and ensure buildings and grounds are safe, clean, and operating at a high level.
  • Oversee technology by managing a third-party vendor and managing/ tracking all equipment.
  • Supervise staff and manage hiring, performance reviews and adherence to policies and procedures.

Professional Qualifications

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in accounting; CPA and/or MBA preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years progressive experience managing accounting, finance and daily operations of a business, nonprofit, or foundation.
  • Proficiency in non-profit accounting, specifically restricted funds required.
  • Experience with annual audits by CPA firms and IRS 990 reporting preferred. 
  • Knowledge of forecasting, budgeting, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Strong general ledger, accounts payable, accounts/pledge receivable, and payroll knowledge.
  • People management experience.
  • Excellent analytical, communication and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel) required and experience with Donor Perfect and Sage is a bonus.
  • Ability to quickly master new technologies required.
  • Experience managing facilities and technology preferred.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

  • The position requires you to be comfortable speaking with members of the public.
  • Work duties and tasks may require speaking, seeing, listening, utilizing arms, hands & fingers for grasping, lifting, operating computers, answering telephone, and in working around animals. 
  • Position may call for repetitive use of hands to perform tasks in addition to operating tools, computers, telephone, cell phone, and computer keyboard.

  • This position may require some work evenings and weekends. 

Primary workplace is at an animal shelter that operates 7 days per week, with exposure to environmental conditions that include working with and near animals and with potential exposure to fractious animals; high noise levels; zoonotic diseases; animal bites and scratches; cleaning chemicals and allergens. Potential exposure of infectious diseases to owned animals. Employees will be working up to 10 hours per day with appropriate breaks and lunch.
