Trout Unlimited is looking for an enthusiastic education coordinator to advance and grow our longstanding fish habitat conservation work in Alaska. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who is excited about the opportunity to help cultivate and grow a new education program. A passion for working with volunteers and kids, an enthusiasm for teaching and fishing, and a strong understanding of the principles of outdoor and conservation education are core traits we are looking for.  As a brand-new position, and the education coordinator will be responsible for developing educational programs related to TU’s fish habitat conservation work in Alaska, helping to implement the Bristol Bay Fly Fishing & Guide Academy (and incubate other, similar programs in other regions), and working with partners and volunteers to introduce Alaskans to the joys of fly fishing and conservation.  


This is a full-time, salaried position.  The Education Coordinator will report to the Southcentral Alaska Engagement Manager and will collaborate closely with our engagement and conservation staff around the state. This position is based in the greater Anchorage area. 


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Develop and implement fish habitat education programs for youth, anglers, and other community members.  
  • Support TU engagement staff in other parts of the state to implement education programs in their area. 
  • Plan, support, and help to implement the annual Bristol Bay Fly Fishing & Guide Academy in coordination with partners. Conduct follow up mentoring with students, post academy.  
  • Build relationships with partners in other regions of Alaska to help to establish other Guide Academy programs.   
  • Teach kids to fish at TU and partner events.  
  • Collaborate with conservation and fishing organizations, tribes, state and federal agencies, and other potential partners to achieve common educational objectives and leverage TU resources. 
  • Collaborate with communications and engagement staff to creatively share the value of TU’s work to Alaska’s fisheries and communities. 
  • Assist with grant reports and proposals related to education.  
  • Manage time and resources to achieve education related grant deliverables in collaboration with the Southcentral Alaska Engagement Manager. 
  •  This is a non-supervisory position, and this is not an all-inclusive list of duties and responsibilities.

Requirements

 QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2-3 years of app lied experience in community education, workforce development, conservation education or youth education. A combination of a college degree and applied experience will also be considered.   
  • A strong understanding of the principles of outdoor, environmental, and/or science education and experience putting them to work in the field. 
  • Ability and desire to establish and cultivate strong working relationships with a wide variety of people and partners. 
  • Enthusiasm for teaching kids and adults outdoors.  
  • Ability to work independently, while staying coordinated with a team.  
  • Excellent time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously. 
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills; including public speaking.  
  • Basic knowledge of fly-fishing skills (or an enthusiasm for learning them). 
  • Ability and willingness to travel and commit to working evening and weekend events. 
  • Valid driver’s license and own vehicle required. A background check will also be required.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, Teams and PowerPoint).
