Position Summary

The Major Gifts Officer is a key role to ensuring that Arrowmont meets its annual fundraising goals through planning and execution. The position reports to the Director of Advancement and works closely with the Chief Officer of Institutional Advancement (COIA) to execute well-defined strategies for the organization's financial success. The MGO is responsible for managing a portfolio of donor prospects, detailed further below. This is a collaborative, action-oriented role for someone who is skilled at building relationships, cultivating large gifts, and being a self-starter. The ideal candidate has a track-record of cultivating realized gifts of $10,000 and higher. This position is full-time, year-round, benefits eligible, and exempt.

· The Major Gifts Officer (MGO) is responsible for managing a portfolio of 175-200 major gift prospects. The MGO will be expected to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major donors and prospects, and must be able to represent Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts enthusiastically and accurately to a variety of constituents including board members, major donors, prospects, and the artistic community.

· The officer works collaboratively with other Institutional Advancement and Arrowmont staff members, to cultivate and solicit donors for Arrowmont’s priorities.

· The officer monitors all prospect contacts to ensure positive and purposeful prospect and donor relations and recommends and assists with programming involving the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Officer for Institutional Advancement, Director of Advancement, and board members.

· The officer will be a key figure in Arrowmont's upcoming capital campaign, working closely with campaign leadership and Arrowmont’s Executive Leadership Team to raise campaign gifts and help to achieve a successful campaign.

Duties and Responsibilities

· Develop appropriate cultivation and solicitation strategies for donors and prospects, moving potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure.

· Participate in all aspects of the gift cycle, working independently in initiating contacts with potential donors.

· Solicit gifts and support the solicitations of others, as appropriate.

· Maintain stewardship contacts with donors; maintain sensitivity to needs of the donors, including:

  • Calling, emailing, and meeting with major gift donors on a regular basis.
  • Drafting major gift proposal documents.
  • Using major giving fundraising and marketing tools.
  • Working collaboratively with board members and staff on fundraising.

· Make decisions about cultivation time committed vs. expected gift; determine pathway for relationships with prospective donors.

· Work with appropriate members of Institutional Advancement staff in developing donor proposals, acknowledgments, and stewardship materials.

· Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications, Education, and Experience

· Bachelor’s degree preferred, though experience outweighs degree.

· 2 to 3 years successful experience in major gift fundraising, preferably in an arts nonprofit.

· Proven self-starter and independent individual contributor.

· Experience working with organizations experiencing growth, with demonstrated successful resources cultivation.

· Excellent oral and written communications skills, with the ability to communicate accurately the vision, mission, and achievement of Arrowmont via its advancement, marketing, and communications activities.

· Strong, creative problem-solver with the ability to work on multiple projects while adjusting quickly to shifting priorities. Must be able to steward multiple projects to successful completion at the same time.


· Excellent research, writing, organizational and interpersonal communication skills.

· The intelligence, maturity, and sound judgment necessary for interacting with major donor prospects, board members, local business leaders, and all Arrowmont constituents and staff.

· Ability to work independently and manage multiple complex tasks simultaneously. Particular ability to multitask, with the ability to steward multiple simultaneous projects to successful completion by deadline and within budget.

· Strong project management skills and a demonstrated ability to set and complete priority projects under deadlines.

· Ability to understand the needs and interests of leadership and major gift donors to develop relationships between them and Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts.

· Successful experience in developing cultivation and solicitation strategies and soliciting gifts.

· Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, DonorSearch, and Raiser’s Edge or similar database system.

· Travel and the ability to work occasional evenings and weekends are required.

Physical Demands

· This position requires travel and the ability to drive a car, is physically demanding and requires the team member to walk unaided up and down hills and over uneven terrain, bend, stoop, reach above their head, have use of fine and gross motor skills, and work in close quarters. The team member must have normal visual acuity at near and far distance with correction and hear the spoken word with correction. The team member must be fluent in English. This position demands frequent exposure to inclement weather.

· The team member is regularly required to sit and to work at a computer. The team member is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or touch objects, tools, or controls and to talk fluently. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move heavy objects or boxes.
