Substitute Teacher
Description

PRIMARY FUNCTION: Under the direction of the school principal is responsible for supporting the Diocese of Nashville in its mission to evangelize and catechize youth in a Catholic School environment, and does so while filling into a position, as needed, during the absence of a regular full-timed teacher. 


GENERAL SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Building Principal, the accepted candidate is responsible for assisting with classroom instruction in the absence of a regular teacher. The substitute teacher is responsible for upholding the same values of regular, full-time employees by fostering the spiritual, intellectual, social, and physical development of children engaged in the Catholic elementary school experience.   


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Recognizes and supports the unique Catholic Mission of the school by speaking, acting, and instructing consistent with the teachings of the Catholic Church; a teacher may not espouse any doctrine inconsistent with the teachings of the Church. 
  • Gives evidence of lived Gospel values; strives to model the teaching of Jesus by attitude and example. 
  • Indicate an intentional approach to the school day by following classroom instruction and promotes positive interactions with students and colleagues. 
  • Follows oral and written directions; understands and follows lesson plans.
  • Sets the proper tone from the beginning for classroom management.
  • Maintains a consistent disciplinary approach in line with the regular full-time teacher's expectations.
  • Maintains a functional and pleasant learning environment. 
  • Is prepared to be flexible during any given school day.
  • Cooperates with school administration; works effectively with all staff members; promotes positive relationships with students.
  • Demonstrates effective communication with full-time teacher as needed. 
  • At all times demonstrate professional responsibility in enforcing diocesan and school policies and regulations. 
  • Maintains confidentiality of information; displays sound judgment in dress and general behavior. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned during a day of substituting.
Requirements

Physical/Mental Requirements

Requires coordination and manual dexterity, normal mental and visual ability; ability to lift as required in a normal office environment.

Basic Qualifications

  • A working knowledge of and a strong commitment to the mission of fostering lay leadership in the Catholic Church 
  • Excellent communications skills including written, verbal, public speaking, and presentation skills 
  • Excellent human relations and interpersonal skills
  • Have reliable transportation 
  • Be able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and operate with high ethical standards
  • Flexibility in assessing needs and adapt appropriately in a ministerial environment 
  • The ability to successfully complete a criminal history and background check 
  • Professional bearing and clean and neat personal appearance 

Education and Experience

  • A Bachelor degree from an accredited university, or working towards one
