Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences (PNWU) was founded as a 501(c) (3) non-profit medical institution in 2005 aimed at increasing access to health care in medically underserved areas of the Pacific Northwest.
The University currently offers the degrees of Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, Doctor of Physical Therapy, Master of Arts in Medical Science, and Master of Science in Occupational Therapy enrolling over 550 students annually with plans to develop other programs and/or colleges. Interprofessional education partnerships with other universities adds another 100 students to the population. The campus includes 300 employees with academic programming spread over a five state region.
PNWU is located in Yakima, WA, a city of approximately 95,000 located in the south central part of the state near the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountains in a major agricultural and outdoor recreation region. General Summary:
Provide psychological services to students including brief individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, psycho educational programs, and referral to psychiatric and /or other medical resources as needed; assist in developing and implementing outreach programming; serve as consultant and educator to students, faculty, and staff.
Essential Job Functions:
• Provide personal counseling (individual and group) to help currently enrolled students identify and understand personal issues that are affecting their quality of life and/or education; may include appropriate use of assessment methods.
• Maintain accurate, complete, appropriate up-to-date files, written reports, and job-related data commensurate with current standards of the profession and professional discipline standards.
• Develop and implement programs and workshops, outreach, programs, and liaison activities designed to foster student success.
• Assist in developing and maintaining a networking relationship with community referral resources.
• Consult with university staff, faculty, students, and other professionals to support students.
• Understand and comply with relevant FERPA and HIPAA standards.
• Performs other related duties as assigned and based on departmental need.
Education:
• Required: Master's Degree (counseling, psychology, social work, mental health counseling), qualified to independently provide counseling/therapy in Washington State
• Required: Washington State License
• Preferred: Doctoral Degree (psychology, counseling, social work), qualified to independently provide counseling/therapy in Washington State
Experience:
• Required: 4-6 years with adults
• Preferred: Experience with high-achieving, graduate students in professional health sciences programs

Skill applying varied therapeutic and psycho educational modalities; skill in program development and implementation; skill in effective communication (both written and oral) with a variety of stakeholders; skill in independent decision making; skill in performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another; skill in problem solving; skill in public speaking; knowledge of regulations regarding confidentiality in therapeutic relationship; knowledge of local social services and other external resources; knowledge of administrative procedures and practices; knowledge of advising and counseling practices; knowledge of customer service principles and practices; knowledge of Microsoft Office suite; ability to maintain professional composure in emergent and crisis situations; ability to collaborate work across departments and disciplines to support students; and ability to apply effective and accurate data entry and typing skills.
