Systems Engineer (Canada)
Montreal, CAN
Description

GNSS (GPS) creates upwards of $500B in economic value in North America every year, supporting everything from consumer applications, to transportation, to time sync for critical infrastructure. As these industries progress towards autonomy, the performance and security demands of their Position, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) systems are increasing beyond what GNSS can support, leaving a need for a cost-effective global solution.

Using lessons we've learned at places like SpaceX and Blue Origin, Xona is building a modern commercial satellite system at the rapid pace of the new space industry leveraging the recent wave of technology and regulatory advancements. Building on our patented small satellite architecture, we are developing a robust and accurate service that is an independent alternative to GNSS rather than a correction, solving the longstanding challenge of obtaining a reliable high accuracy solution. Our satellite system will provide the first ever high-accuracy global navigation and timing services with the security and resilience that modern applications need to operate safely at scale.

Xona is seeking a GNSS Systems Engineer to join our team who will be responsible for developing and optimizing navigation algorithms and designing GNSS+Xona PULSAR receivers to ensure accurate and reliable positioning and navigation solutions. Additionally, you will optimize, evaluate, analyze, and modify existing positioning algorithms for improvement, working collaboratively with our navigation and software engineers. The role requires expertise in both software and hardware aspects of GNSS systems. From high-performance signal processing to real-time control applications, your expertise will be at the heart of our innovative constellation. This role will support the development and certification of next generation LEO GNSS downstream applications. You will support end-user navigation performance tests and analyses with Xona LEO-based signals and show value add of PULSAR signals. You will work closely with the engineering , product, and the business teams as well as interfacing with external customers and partners.

Requirements
  •  Minimum of BS / BEng in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Geomatics, Aerospace, or related field and/or 4 years’ experience.
  • Experience with R&D, implementation of signal and data processing methods, analysis, and optimization of advanced navigation algorithms in enhancing the accuracy, reliability, and robustness for GNSS systems.
  • Experience in FPGA development, including design, implementation, and verification of complex digital systems.
  • Familiarity with testing using hardware simulators, hardware-in-the-loop testing, data processing, and field testing.
  • Excellent project management skills and ability to collaborate with external partners.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in both English and French.

Desired Qualifications:

  •  Proficiency in GNSS principles, including satellite signal processing, positioning techniques, and error sources.
  • Experience with GNSS receiver hardware design, including RF circuitry, analog-to-digital conversion, and signal processing.
  • Understanding and interpretation of GNSS Interface Control Documents (ICD) and data/file formats such as RINEX, SP3, NMEA.
  • Proficiency in hardware description languages (HDL) such as Verilog and VHDL, as well as familiarity with FPGA development tools and methodologies.
  • Experience with LEO satellite signals in navigation.
  • Experience with SDRs and GNU Radio/GNSS SDR.
  • Experience in modelling jamming, interference, multipath environments.
  • Experience with MATLAB, C++, and Python.
  • Familiarity with Git and the Git workflow.
  • Self-starter with a drive for excellence.
  • Openness to work with and support operations with remote team.
