This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic urban, growing organization just 5 miles west of New York City in the water front city of Perth Amboy.   The Raritan Bay Area YMCA has served the ever-evolving needs of our community since 1912.  We enthusiastically serve over 6,000 members in the Raritan Bay area in our community building initiatives through Healthy Living, Youth Development and Social Responsibility.


Under the direction of the Facilities Director, the Maintenance Assistant performs a broad range of carpentry duties to ensure the maintenance, orderliness and cleanliness of the YMCA facility, properties and grounds. The Maintenance Assistant must exhibit sound judgment, have great interpersonal skills, and the ability to function well in a fast-paced environment. The Maintenance Assistant demonstrates cause driven leadership through the following YMCA Leadership Competencies- Mission Advancement; Collaboration; Operational Effectiveness and Personal Growth. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Performs general handy man duties including:

     - Perform general maintenance repairs in residential and commercial properties

     - Handle various task such as carpentry, electrical, painting, plumbing, landscaping etc.

     - Snow removal during inclement weather and emergencies using snow blowers and snow shovels;  and apply snow melting      

       chemicals  

     - Maintain properties clen and clear of debris

     - Conduct routine inspections to identify issues and recommend repairs 

     - Ensure compliance with safety regulations, code enforcement and company policies

  • Notify managers concerning the need for major repairs, building and stock problems 
  • Requisition (to supervisor) supplies and equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties
  • Drive vehicles required to perform or travel to cleaning work
  • Perform other tasks as assigned

This is a part-time, nonexempt position.

Requirements

A. Experience:

  • Previous experience in building and residential maintenance
  • General handyman

B. Education/Certification

  • High School Diploma 
  • Valid and Current Drivers' License

C. Skills: 

  • Some knowledge of carpentry, electrical and plumbing; should be able to perform general repairs
  • Must be able to climb ladders, operate power tools, operate and maintain landscaping and snow removal equipment
  • Ability to use equipment and chemicals in prescribed manner, including ability to read labels, MSDS information sheets, and instructions. 
  • Ability to stay alert to potential safety and security problems. 
  • Ability to carry out instructions independently. 
  • Ability to get along with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Skills in planning, organizing, systematizing, implementing are essential.
  • Must have proven skills in problem solving, decision-making and time management skills. 

D. Interpersonal Skills:

  • Familiar with the culture and mission of the organization 
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills required.
  • Friendly and polite.  Ability to negotiate and manage interactions with employees, coworkers, department heads, vendors as needed
  • Ability to be gracious with all persons of various ages, cultures, and creeds.
  • Ability to keep records organized and as applicable-confidential.

This position is required to be performed on the YMCA premises and properties with regular interaction with tenants, members, and staff.  Supervision received from Facilities Director as well as Senior Staff.

Salary Description
$20-$22/hour
