Job Summary

The Substation Physical Design Engineer Consultant role is a mid level, part-time, contract position. This position is fully-remote, allowing you to work from home, as work is needed. While working alongside a team of experienced electrical engineers and providing guidance to junior engineers and designers, this position is responsible for designing, developing, and implementing electrical systems and protection controls for substations. Duties/Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Exceed customer’s schedule and budget requirements
  • Perform Physical design with high degree of accuracy
  • Willingness to travel and work overtime as needed
  • Perform careful self-checking activities to ensure the quality of work before it is presented to peers for independent reviews
  • Check/review other personnel's work for accuracy/adherence to client/national standards
  • Oversee multiple projects simultaneously and occasionally oversee other designers and engineers in order to complete projects on time and on budget
  • Perform project scoping activities
  • Mentor junior engineers and designers
Requirements

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough understanding of substation equipment, protection schemes, and industry standards
  • Strong understanding of a substation project lifecycle at the utility level
  • Excellent technical communication and detail-oriented work practices
  • Proficiency in the development of the following: 
    • Electrical General Arrangement and Layout drawings
    • Yard Equipment Details & Elevations
    • Grounding Plans & Details
  • Conduit/Cable/Raceway Plans & Details
  • Bill of Materials
  • Station Service and Battery Systems 
  • Lighting Plans & Details
  • Electrical Bus Calculations (Loading, Span, Ampacity, etc.)
  • Phase-to-Phase and Phase-to-Ground Electrical Clearances
  • Lightning Protection/Grounding Studies
  • Extensive experience utilizing AutoCAD and/or MicroStation and must also be able to use Microsoft Design Suite products (Excel, Word, etc.)
  • CDEGS and/or WinIGS experience is a plus  
  • Possession of proven leadership skills involving supervision of a design team or teams is a plus

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree from an ABET-accredited university in Electrical Engineering required
  • Minimum 9 years of experience in physical design of high voltage 15-500 kV substations
  • Extensive experience utilizing AutoCAD and/or MicroStation software
  • EIT required, PE strongly preferred
Salary Description
$50.00 - $75.00 Hourly
